A New (Old) Theme

I got tired of the really narrow post area on this site so I ditched the stock theme provided by Typepad that I was using. I reverted back to an older theme I was using, and tweaked the color pallet a bit. I hope it makes for a better presentation. I am still looking at other custom themes that I might use if I upgrade my account to allow me to really edit the way the site looks. It turns out I can only do that on the high end package Typepad offers.

Just one of the things I am tinkering on this lazy Sunday afternoon.

Lack of a Vox Update

I have yet to find a way to import or export blog entries on the new Vox system. There may be a way but I haven’t found it. If I can’t find something like that in 15 minutes on a site like that, there is no point in continuing to look. Realistically I don’t think it exists. For now I will stick with Six Apart’s other blog platform, typepad. you know the system that you are reading right now. that means that some of my posts regarding work will remain on a private site. Yes, there are in fact posts that are not published to the world right now. not as many recently as I would have hoped, but they do exist. As I sometimes tell Kai, ask me about them after I leave (my current job). until then, no chance they will see the light of day. Nothing overtly bad or anything, just it was clear that certain things should not be public.

Ok, enough on this update. My hands grow tired. More later.

Playing with VOX

I signed up for a free vox account. I am interested in the fact that I can apply security groups to posts and allow some people to see it. I am wondering if that would enable me to resume my (semi)public posting regarding work stuff? Not sure yet. I am still playing with the service. So far I am in no rush to cancel my Typepad account.

WordPress, Not For Me Yet

I spent part of the day Sunday messing around with a WordPress install on my personal website. Yes I am paranoid so I keep this blog semi-annonimous and I also keep a regular website. It isn’t like someone could figure out who I am easily but in order to keep the powers that be (the people that pay me) from getting concerned about a blog I don’t mention last names, where I work, co-worker stories etc.

Since I do have a separate site to mess around with I tried to play with a stock WordPress install I got from my new hosting provider, Site5. I installed a bunch of cool plug-ins for the app. Unfortunately as of now, I have hit a major stumbling block that will prevent me from using WordPress to host my blog. The software does not support exporting blog entries in the out of the box configuration. You can get a plug in that will supposedly do this, but I have yet to get the plug into work properly. This is after editing the php file a bit. I got it to almost work, but I still get an error. For now I have given up.

If I get more time another day, maybe I will mess around with it some more, but I always feel if I can’t get something working pretty quick (for software such as this that means a few hours, but store bought stuff it is under an hour) I need to stop and move on.

Spoke Too Soon

So whenever I write about some service or piece of gear that I like or am content with I always jinx myself and end up finding some reason to get rid of it or change something right after I write about it. My post “2 Years on Typepad” is one of those times. Today while looking to solve one problem on the web, I stumbled across an application that I wanted to try on my website. In trying to figure out how to do the install I found a web host (actually several) that had this app pre-installed and ready to use. My current hosting provider is great, I wasn’t kidding about that, but they provide only basic site tools compared with some of these other providers. After doing some more research I have decided to sign up for an account with Site 5. It looks like they offer the same or more basic features as my current provider Media Temple, but they also package in tons (50+) pre-built packages that you can run that install open source apps to your account. I could probably install the same tools on Media Temple, but why should I if I can get the same stuff with the click of a button from Site 5? After I add up all the costs on Site 5 compared to my Media Temple account I will be paying the same amount. I signed up a little while ago, and I will use the 60 day free trial. Since I am very picky we will see if Site 5 does anything to piss me off or not.

One of the pre-built packages they offer is WordPress, so even this blog is not safe from me wanting to shake things up a bit.

2 Years on Typepad

Last week marked the second anniversary of me moving my blog to Typepad. Even after some bumpy spots, the service has been great. It is easy to use and offers allot. That is why I have been lazy and not just hosted my blog myself. It would only be slightly a pain for me to setup a Moveabletype or WordPress site on my Mac, or a linux box, but I just don’t want to deal with the effort of keeping the system up if I can pay and have it hosted properly. That is of course the same excuse why I host my mail and website now, instead of hosting my mail myself or have Miguel host it on his server with a ton of of other people I know.

People Actually Read This!

A funny thing happened when I was looking at this sites statistics. I found people finding my site from an unlikely source, VMware’s blog site. Looks like someone over there found my March 27th post about a P2V. I thought that was very cool. Especially since I don’t get tons of hits to the site. I think they have great products, and I don’t mind telling people about them. I will just as easily say really bad things about bad products. See previous posts for really bad rants! Knock on wood, that P2V I wrote about is still running perfect after several weeks. Allot of people where skeptical about the Windows server not performing properly after the conversion to a virtual machine. My group was confident, but it was a hard sell to some. Now the skeptics are glad we did the conversion, and don’t worry about the app anymore.

The reference on the VMNT Blog got me wondering why in recent months after I changed the site’s URL why am I still having allot less page views than in the past. I used to have 5 times as many hits with the old domain name. I gave google a while to spider me and still no change. Kind of weird. I don’t mind that much since I write this stuff more as a journal than for recognition. In many ways I go out of my way for anonymity!

In other Virtual news for me I have Parallel’s Beta 4 installed on a brand new Intel Core Duo Mini at work. So far that VM product looks great. I can’t wait for a final version to come out. Anything to let me run Windows on my Mac without rebooting. I am still holding out hope that VMware will make a Workstation product, and maybe a management console for GSX & ESX server. Until then I think I will get by on Parallel’s, but one can dream for the future!

The Evil Empire

I have so much I want to say, I don’t even know where to start or how much I will get out. Some people have their own impressions of “evil” corporate empires exist out there. I have friends that bash some retail store chains as being evil, or others who can’t stand some or all media empires. Most of those opinions are based on ideals, and some passing interaction with said companies. I on the other think the true “evil empire” out there is one that is partially transparent to people. I am talking about a company I will call the LEC that will not be named. If you don’t know a LEC is better know as “Local Exchange Carriers”. They are the SBC’s, Bell South’s, & Verizon’s of the world. You most likely deal with them with your home phone. The thing is everyday people don’t realize is that if you use an alternate provider for anything like phone service, or even business class T-1’s you still must use a LEC. The LEC owns and operates the physical lines in a given area. They own the copper and or fiber into buildings and houses. in some rare cases you have providers also having their own fiber or copper into an array, but that is uncommon.

So here is the situation most people don’t realize can happen. You have big name internet provider X as your data T-1 or voice T-1 service. They are a huge company but they do not own the local lines in the area you do business. That means between your office and provider X’s POP (Point of presence) you must utilize a LEC. If you don’t know better provider X won’t ever really bring that up, but I know this is the case. it is not that they hide that fact from you, but it is not something that will be highlighted on page one of a contract.

So this is the situation. You take time and effort to design a highly resilient internet backbone for an office that needs high availability on their voice and data setup. You spend the time and money to get multiple POP’s from provider X. You also get multiple routers setup with HSRP & BGP. All bases are covered, right? Wrong. The LEC who will not be named has a problem at their central office. All those nicely diversified circuits all go through the same LEC. Remember provider X will give you diversity, but they don’t own or control the lines into your office. If your area is serviced by 1 LEC, all your lines go through the same conduit out to the same CO (central office). Well if that CO has a problem with lets say some hardware, all your network diversified circuits are down. The LEC is the pinch point in most situations. Now if you have provider X, they will try to fix the issue. If they can’t figure it out, they will escalate the issue with the LEC who will not be named. Here is one problem. YOU or I are not a customer of the LEC who will not be named. Provider X is. You are considered a wholesale customer of the LEC who will not be named. To them you are the least important person. Now, they may say otherwise, but if you ever negotiated a T-1 between provider X and the LEC who will not be named, the LEC all but says you are not important if you use provider X. Is it true? I think so, but it may be a negotiation tactic. In any case when you have a problem, the LEC who will not be named seems to not care. Even if they ARE quick to respond they have the attitude of “we are big LEC who you have to use. We will get to you whenever we want”. I have had that feeling several times over the years. That is why I have come to the conclusion that the LEC who will not be named is the true evil empire.

So in a vague (or not so vague depending on if you know the true story) I have vented about my technical woes today. I know shit happens. When people ask why something is down (when telecom circuits and major network gear is down, not the minor stuff) I tell them I honestly don’t know how the stuff works the 99.999% of the time it does. Really. People think I am kidding, but if you ever had to spend 12+ hours trying to get the LEC who will not be named on the phone when you have an outage and when you finally do get them to do something it is fixed in 20 minutes you will begin to think like I am. I mean come on at least look like are trying to care about my problem!

And that reminds me of what Howard said to me when he stopped by my office today in the middle of the disaster that was my day. He was like, at least you are not having capacity problems like Sixaprt and their Typepad service was having. I had to laugh. He didn’t realize I use them. I think he thought I was using Gus’ server still. The funny thing was I gave them prop’s for how they were handling the situation. I sent an email to their CEO commenting on their outages and how they are communicating the issues to customers and I got a response in like 2 hours. How then can billion dollar LEC who won’t be named take 3 hours just to get one of multiple tickets into their system when calling the emergency support line? I am not talking about calling the “hi, my home phone isn’t working” number. I am talking about the “I spend allot of money and many circuits are down” number. It is really scary how a small company can be so responsive and a large one just plain old suck. Of course I should know that by now, since my company is not that big and we are SO much more responsive to issues than people we deal with. Yes small plug for my own tech group, but it is true.

Ok, by this point in my writing tonight I think I am just rambling. It has been a long day, and by now I am sobering up, but yes I did have a few drinks before I got home and started writing tonight. Hey it is Halloween and I went out for a few with friends from the office before coming home. I can’t remember if I have been over my opinion on the evil empire? If not I think I made myself clear tonight. Am I asking for too much? All I want is to get a person on the phone when I have a problem, and have them seem interested in solving my issue and get me back up and running. That person should also speak clear understandable english, and must understand when others speak clear and concise english. Forgot to mention that issue. Not sure what was worse, the FULLY automated ticketing system of one company today, or the get an offshore support person who cannot fully understand what you are saying number? Then there was the automated update system that called every 30 minutes with a message telling us nothing has changed. that would have been ok, if it wasn’t for the fact that we had 4 issues open at the same time, so Jayson had calls every few minutes. And in their attempt to be good about contacting people on alternate numbers if you didn’t answer your primary one, they would call Jay’s cell phone if he didn’t pick up his work one. The issue was he didn’t want to get more calls from auto response guy, but they kept calling.

Really I have come to the conclusion that I should not write about things that really bother me right after they happen. When I do, I write allot of stuff that is true, but when I am calmer I might not have written. For my own safety names of companies and details of issues have been deliberately modified in this post. The general issue is true, and yes I had a bad day today. I need to take a vacation day soon! On that note, I am going to stop writing. If I have more things to say about the LEC who shall not be named I will write later. On a semi positive note, provider X was not as bad as the LEC who shall not be named. They sucked allot, but at least their sales guy who I deal with allot was able to get some escalations in for me. That is saying something, in a day full of problems. Did it help? I don’t know, but it made me feel a bit better.

Flickr And Me

I signed up for the Flickr photo service a few months ago. I just never used it. I thought, I have a photo album on Typepad, and I use a MOB on Textamerica. I also maintain a photo album site on my home page. Why do I need to post my photos somewhere else? Well the devil is in the details. I finally went onto the Flickr site and was looking around. You can do some cool stuff with the site. I also like the ability to batch upload files using iPhoto since someone wrote a plug in. I already uploaded the past 2 months worth of photos to the site.

I also found someone posted how to take a Flickr badge and use it in Typepad. I got it setup in 5 minutes. Not bad! Now I am going to play with the tags on some of my photos.

I can also get rid of my Typepad photo album. It was easy to use and convenient to have, but it was never that great. I can delete the photos and save space on my account, not that I need to!

13 Months With Typepad

Last week (or so) I passed my 1 year mark as a paying customer of Typepad. How do I remember this? I just glanced at my credit card statement and saw that they charged another year onto the card. I am not upset. I thought the renewal was coming up. I actually started using them in early September last year but I had a 1 month trial. I am normally against paying for hosting services since I could easily to it myself. But recently (actually starting with me using typepad) I have gotten lazy and figure it is just easier to let someone else deal with my hosting. that is why I host nothing at home anymore, and I have less stress to show for it.
