3 Hours Wasn’t So Bad

After what felt like a really long time the new iPhone 3G came out today. I had mixed thoughts of the first generation iPhone, even though I bought one the second day they were out. I also returned it two days later. I also tried again a few months later, and yet again returned it. The first generation phone had some limitations that I couldn’t get over. The new 3G version however is a different story. Really, it is a different story. I am writting about it in a future post so I won’t cover it here. Neadless to say when the new iPhone came out, I wanted to get it right away. I have been growing warry of my Nokia E61i as the weeks pass by. The launch of the iPhone 3G couldn’t have happened any faster!

My plan was to get up a little early and head over to an AT&T Wireless store near my office. I was hoping that the line at an AT&T store wouldn’t be too bad. If it was I could always just leave and goto work, since it was only a 3 block walk. All in all I was willing to commit about 2 hours to the ordeal, and if it looked crazy I would goto plan B. Plan B was to go the 5th Ave Apple store that is open 24 hours sometime later in the evening with the hopes of getting a shorter line at night.

I got to the AT&T store about 7:40AM and there was already about 50 people in line. I found out later that if I got there around 7 it would have been more like 5 people in front of me. I waited in line with everyone else for about 45 minutes. The line was moving slowly but I saw progress. Then an AT&T rep comes out and said that they were already out of 16GB Black models. Of course that was the one that I wanted so I was not too happy. I figured I could still get a White 16GB model and it would be ok. A few minutes later another AT&T employee came out and said that by the time they got to our area of the line they most likely would be out of all 16GB models. At that point I said forget this, and went to work. All told it was about an hour of time invested, but I made it to work before 9AM so all was well.

My original plan was to go home after work and come back to the Apple Store on 5th Ave really late (I figured 10-11PM would be late enough that most of the line would have dissipated). I hadn’t been sleeping much this week since I had some sort of minor bug. Nothing crazy but I didn’t really want to go back out again later. Instead I headed out of work a little early and went up to the Apple Store. Now this plan was only good for me since the day turned out to not be really hot. It was actually very nice and comfortable outside so waiting in line in the sun wasn’t so bad. if it would have been a scorcher day my plans would have been radically different. New toy vs staying cool, I am siding with cool. There is limits to my craziness.

The line there was really long (see photos below), but as the security guy said it was the shortest it was all day. The security guy I spoke to estimated the line from where I was to be around 2 hours. I didn’t have anywhere else to be, and I wanted the phone so I decided to see how long I could hold out on line. The thing about me is that I don’t like lines. I get that from my dad. If I could order something online I would, but if you want something right away you sometimes have to brave the lines. I once waited in an airport 11 hours, and stuck on a plane another 9 hours or so another time. That was just to get home, so waiting 2 hours for something I actually wanted was worth some time. It is crazy rationalization but not the craziest I have made, so what the heck.

To keep myself occupied I listened to my iPod, read the news via Avantgo on my E61i, and just did allot of people watching. A line like the one I was on really brought out the diversity of the city. It was interesting just to watch and listen to my surroundings. The security guy turned out to be right and wrong at the same time about the wait. It was about two hours from when I started until I got into the actual Apple Store.

Once inside however the process was no where near finished. The store itself was pretty empty compared to other normal days that I have been there. They split people into two new lines. One at each end of the store. Each line went just as slow as outside. At least now I was in AC and near a bathroom if needed. Of course it wasn’t so hot outside so the AC wasn’t such a big deal.

iPhone 3G Launch Waiting in Line at the Apple Store on 5th Ave - 5

Once I actually got to a sales guy was when my problems really started. I knew going into this purchase that I might have a problem. The issue was that back in March I changed phone numbers on my AT&T Wireless account. Now what AT&T said they could do and actually do when they switched numbers wasn’t exactly the same thing. I was told that this could be a simple change and that it wouldn’t affect my contract in any way. Turned out it wasn’t. In the end most issues were resolved, but not everything. What had happened was instead of replacing my current number with the new one, they actually created a new line on my account and then removed the old one. That messed up my roll over minutes, contract end date, equipment replacement eligibility date, price plans, etc. The representatives I spoke to on the phone were actually very helpful in fixing most of my issues compared to the mess the people in the store caused. They fixed my contract end date back to when it was supposed to be. They got me back on the really good data plan that I had that was no longer offered. They could have tried to work on the roll over minutes, but since I was moving to an unlimited voice plan I told them it didn’t matter. I was more worried about the contract date than anything else. Unfortunately it turns out the date that was really important, the date I can get equipment at a discounted price wasn’t touched. I didn’t know it was important until later. In June I noticed that even though my contract was up in December I wasn’t eligible for a new phone until March 09. That didn’t make sense since even though my account was messed up in March, I never actually bought equipment at a discounted price. I called AT&T again and they did some research. They said that yes the date was messed up and that it was in fact an error on their end. They read me back the notes they put on my account basically saying that when I wanted new equipment it was ok to discount it for me. They did caution me that I may or may not need to call customer service when buying the new equipment. That was the reason I tried going to the AT&T store first, vs the Apple Store. So when I got to the end of the line and ran into a problem with AT&T’s computer it wasn’t a surprise. The question became, was I going to argue and end up having to call AT&T and wait on line for ages with them, or worse lose my place on the Apple line and have the last 2 1/2 hours of waiting be for nothing. I figured AT&T would have a huge queue on the phone on a day like today, so I opted to say screw it and just pay the extra money for the phone. I will call next week and see if I can get that money back, but I don’t think it will happen. I chalk the extra cost up to wanting to have immediate gratification!

After the issue with the AT&T price was over, my issues weren’t done. They actually had an issue approving my credit card. That was a total surprise to me, but the issue turned out to be the wireless credit card unit the guy checking me out used was having problems connecting to his wireless system. A few retries later I was all set. I browsed the store a bit more and bought a screen protector and a clear case. Once all my purchases were done, I headed home. The line looked a bit shorter as I was leaving, but it was at least a two hour wait at 8:30 at night.

All told my entire ordeal took about 3 hours. Was it worth it? So far I think so, but for me my mobile is one of the tools I use all the time so having a good one that works is critical. For the past several months I haven’t had one that worked right. I also got the model I wanted, the 16GB Black one! My thoughts on day to day use of the new phone will come after I use it next week. For now I am syncing it up with my stuff, and resting my feet!

Home Videos

Other really cool news that happened yesterday was that I got back my families home movies from Home Movie Depot. They were finished allot sooner than I anticipated, so I was really happy. I browsed the DVD’s since I wanted to see them, but I need to sit with my parents and watch the whole things since they can tell me what and who I am seeing.

First impressions are that this service was fantastic. Some of the clips are really washed out and almost impossible to see, but I think that has more to do with the fact that they were in a box for 35 years and may have been poorly shot when they were taken. Most of the clips looked great.

I am also glad I spent the extra money on the hard drive with the original AVI’s they created before they burned the DVD’s. I do want to re-order the clips since I labeled them wrong. I also would love to try and add music to the video since there is no audio on old 8mm film. All the source material AVI’s equal about 20 Gig’s of drive space. I am going to keep those, and make copies to play with. I want to see if i can convert them to put on my Flickr account, or my Apple TV. To me, cleaning them up will be a fun project. I am going to see what I can do with the clips in iMovie, and iDVD. If I can’t do everything that I want, I will play around with Final Cut Express, but I am not sure if that program is overkill for my needs.

I am planning on having my family over and have a BBQ and then view the DVD’s!!!

Wedding Invites

Other news from this weekend is that I got not one, but two wedding invitations. My cousin Adrian is getting married in August. I need to make arrangements at work to go, since the wedding is just before 6pm on a Friday. It seems like an odd time but I think I can work from my home, or to be more precise my parents house that day and then go straight to the wedding from there.

The other wedding invite I got is from my friend John. He is getting married in September. His wedding seems interesting. It will be very casual. So casual he stated that weather permitting he wants to encourage shorts for everyone. unfortunately my cousin Adrian’s wedding is a bit more dressy than that.

Plans and Canceled Plans

Last night I went to dinner with Danny. We were going to hit a movie, but as I suspected there wasn’t anything good out. We meet up for food and drink instead. I haven’t seen him in a few weeks so it was nice to get together for a bit.

Today I was supposed to have my friends Rich & Amanda over for a while. We were going to BBQ on the outside deck of my building. Their daughter had other plans for them. She got sick last night so they were up all with her. Not the best time to take a one year old out for BBQ. We have a rain check for later in the month. I haven’t seen either of them in months, so I was a bit bummed. I will freely admit that it takes a while for me to make friend (I can be picky so sue me) so when I don’t get to see old friends it kind of sucks. I understand since Rich is working full time and is in Law school. I did get to talk to Amanda for a while on the phone today so it was good to touch base with them. Like I said we will try again later in the month.

THe 4th

I am off to visit Jayson’s place for the 4th. I had a choice of Jayson & Gretchen in Poughkeepsie or my sister, and my brother in law’s sisters family with all their kids at their summer house in Penn. Since I just saw my sister and the kids last weekend, I decided to go upstate. The trip to Penn is a real pain and Jayson’s is just up the river on Metro North. Granted it is at the other end of the line on Metro North, but so far the trip is not so bad.

I got out of work at 3pm today, since the holiday is tomorrow. That was good. I got a moderate amount of work done today. Mainly updating project plans and going over documentation. Fun.

I was going to meet up with Louis for drinks, but he got really busy at work. I haven’t seen him since Mina’s going away party so it would be nice to get together even if it is for a drink or two. We are going to rain check and try again early next week. I am not holding my breath on that one. Since those plans were canceled I decided to pack my overnight bag and head up to Jay’s tonight instead of tomorrow morning. I figure I can head home tomorrow night after the BBQ or Saturday morning.

Another former boss I just spoke to was Gus. He IM’d to say hi. I love that he tries to make me feel guilty that we don’t hang out, but he is the one with the crazier schedule. Jayson won’t even put him down on a calendar to meet up because of the last minute cancel. He figures if i get together with Gus and it actually happens I would call and he would meet up. He is kind of right since that has actually worked for him a few times. I need to get back to Gus and let him know when is good to hang. It is alway too long between meet ups.

8mm Film Conversion

Being in technology I have tried to digitize as much stuff as possible. I have been scanning documents since 2000. I have been using a Tivo vs VCR’s since 2001. Over the years (since 1995 actually) I have made it a project to scan as many photos that I could. In the past 8 years all new photos have been in digitial format making archiving them easy. I still have a long way to go scanning all my families old photos, but I have allot of the really good ones scanned already.

The one area of digital archiving that I have had an issue with was old videos. I have done crude conversions of VCR tapes to AVI a few years ago of my Bar Mitzvah video and my sisters sweet sixteen video. The source material wasn’t so great so the quality of the video wasn’t so hot. I never was able to clean it up using final cut since I would have had to do a bunch of converting to different file formats. The biggest amount of video that my parents have of me and my sister growing up is on 8mm however. Converting that to some sort of digital media is not something you can do a good job of doing yourself. I have looked for places locally that would do the job, but wasn’t too happy with the selection (aka I thought most of them seemed kind of shady). Last year I found two different places online that looked like they were very reputable and did this sort of digital archiving all the time. I proceeded to loose the links to the sites and tossed out hours of research. I promised my mom that I would convert all the 8mm video to DVD. I thought she would be really happy but didn’t seem to into it. I think she just didn’t want that as her birthday gift:( Well last week I decided to find the sites I researched last year. I found them and selected one of them to send in my videos to.

I ended up choosing The Home Movie Depot. At first I was going to send in one reel of 25′ to see how the quality was. I was also concerned about the fact that I was shipping irreplaceable family history, and I didn’t have any backups. After reading the reviews of the site, and weighing all my options I just decided to send in everything. I figured there aren’t many places that look like they can do this type of work very well, and if I didn’t convert them they wouldn’t be looked at anyway. I also want to get them onto another format before the film goes bad. I don’t even know if the film is still good now, but the two canisters I opened looked ok.

I am waiting for the Home Movie Depot to send me the packing materials to ship in my 20 25′ reels and two 350′ reels. For something like this I paid extra for the packing materials as well as overnight shipping. I heard from a logistics guy I know that overnight is always better for sensitive stuff since it has less of a chance to get lost. Once I send in the film it will be about 2 weeks until I get them back on DVD. I also paid to have the original AVI’s they create put onto a hard drive. That way I should be able to create my own DVD’s and add sound tracks and stuff to the video’s.

I am excited to see these films once I get them back. I remember being little and watching them with the family. It was always a production to get out the projector and look at them. I don’t think I have seen then in at least 25 years. If this comes out well, I will send in any remaining slides my dad hasn’t scanned to just get those done also. The process for the film conversion isn’t cheap but if it does what I want it to, the cost is worth it. I will probably write more about this once I get the film back.

Dinner With The Family

My sister was in Queens today for a birthday party. That meant I got to see the family for dinner. Everyone made it out to my place since my sister was driving back to Jersey after we ate it was centrally located for everyone. I like being centrally located since I am the only one in the family that doesn’t have a car. I was able to get a few shots of the kids when we were eating. Zachary enjoyed making a big mess of his ice cream! As usual all he wanted was to be hanging with his Poppy!

It was an early dinner since Carrie had a long drive home with the kids.

My Blog Entry For Sunday 6-29-2008

Yesterday and today were both uneventful. I wanted to relax this weekend since next weekend is the holiday and I don’t know if I will get a chance to rest then! I cleaned up my apartment. That took some time. I got some storage crates that I ordered online so I cleaned up a closet that was in dire need of a sorting. I need to get some more of the storage devices. I am thinking of some to use under my bed. I will see how much crap I have left to deal with before I buy more.

I am also getting rid of an old piece of luggage. This Samsonite luggage was very useful when I traveled. I lived out of it for months. Unfortunately with the extra fees for oversized luggage on airlines now a days I can’t see ever using this again. I haven’t used it in a while so off it goes anywhere but my apartment!

My Blog Entry for Friday 6-27-2008

This entry is for events yesterday but was written on the 28th. Work was what you could call a typical Friday. We almost had a big scare with a file server, but it turned out to not be as bad as we thought. Any maintenance that can be held off until after hours is not such an emergency! I was able to get through a bunch of writing documentation that I needed to work on, but that sucked up allot of my day.

I met up with Jayson for lunch. It is only the second time since I started the new job that I have been out to lunch with friends. It is hard to get time like that at a new job.

After work I meet up with Luke, Vanessa, Jeannette, and others for some drinks after work. We were semi celebrating someone’s departure from my old company. The real going away party is next Wednesday. That will be the 2nd person to go after I left.

I left that group around 8:30 with the hopes of meeting up with Jayson and Gretchen for a drink. Gretchen had traveled into the city to meet Jay for dinner. I didn’t realize they had already headed back to the burbs until after I left my other friends. I was tired so I didn’t want to head back to what would eventually end up being a late night of Karaoke so I headed home to drink lots of water.
