Drinks & Karaoke

After an agonizing second half of the week at work I was glad to meet up with some friends for an all you can drink 2 hours, followed by some Karaoke. I can't go into what went on at work, but I am amazed at the positive and negative capacity of some people. I will probably write more about the topic on my private work blog but whatever I have to say really isn't for public consumption as much as I would like to vent about it.

I meet up with Luke and a bunch of his work friends at a bar relatively near Grand Central around 6PM, aka right before it poured. We had a two hours all you can drink for $15 special going on. I admit i am a light weight when it comes to drinking but I attempted to get my moneys worth. I can't recall if I did, so I might have! From there we went over to Japas for some Karaoke. We meet up with Vanessa, Ben & Mike. I hung out for a while until I went home to crash after my horrible week. Before I left I do recall taking part in some musical antics, but don't remember what songs they were. Oh well.

Meeting Old Friends

Last night I meet up with my friend Karen. She was in from Baton Rouge and was having a little get together with her friends. We meet at a bar near Cooper Square. I had fun, even though I only knew Karen and barely knew one or two other of her friends. All our other mutual friends punked out and didn't want to come into the city. Who would have though I was the adventurous outgoing one of the group?

Like I said I had fun, but I guess I didn't realize how much I had to drink. I felt like crap all night long and barely slept. I didn't think I drank that much, but I guess after 4 hours I might have. Dam Jack Daniels, you taste too good in Coke.

I hope to get down to Baton Rouge sometime when I finally get some vacation time and hang with Joe & Karen. It has been 2 years since I last saw Joe. I don't like loosing touch with old friends.

The rest of the day was taken up by me trying to sleep and relax after a horrible sleepless night. I should have taken a photo of all the blown capillaries under my eyes. It was nasty. I am now trying to wind down so I can get ready for the work week ahead.

Light Friday Night

Busy morning at work. A few meetings, and a few canceled meetings. I did get to meet up with Jayson for lunch. Since I started my new job back in May I haven’t had much opportunity to goto lunch with friends. The two main reasons are I am at a new job, and it is hard to get away for a while during the day, even if it is once every week or every two weeks. The main reason I haven’t meet up much with friends is because I am working on the east side again, and now all my friends are working on the west side. I went from being centrally located to everyone, to being really far away from everyone. That goes back to reason 1, not having tons of time to get away especially since travel time to meet up with everyone at our usual spot would take a while.

I was able to get some real work done in the afternoon (real, vs meetings I have been in since Tuesday). I wrapped up the day with staff meetings with most of my team. So yeah more meetings was fun.

Not much going on tonight. I didn’t see anyone online in the late afternoon to see if anyone was going out for drinks. I wasn’t really up for drinks anyway so it worked out. I have been drained once work is over for the past few weeks. I will take rest when I can.

The Pharmacy

I am back at the pharmacy for the second time this week since my prescription wasn’t completely ready when I went on Monday. This sucks because it is the old pharmacy I went to near my old office. Well sort of, the pharmacy I used to goto closed and this is one nearby the old one. The problem is my new office is totally cross town and a pain to get to this one. Two trips in a week is one thing, but for some reason this place is always busy. There is always a 15 minute line, and every time I have been there they never have had my prescriptions ready even after calling or refilling online days before. I am stuck going here since for some reason the prescription I am refilling cannot be moved to a different pharmacy.

At least this was the most annoying thing to happen to me today. I was in meetings most of the day so it was a bit grueling but otherwise uneventful.

Sleeping Issues With a Twist

I have had on and off (mainly on) sleeping troubles since I decided to start looking for a new job back in April. There is no question it is stress related. It had gotten better as I settled into my new job, but last week I started having problems again, but this time with a twist. I don’t know what I did but now my neck has been hurting really bad. I think it might have started by me sleeping on it wrong, but it also hurts during the day periodically. I have had neck pain before (I went to a chiropractor when i was like 11 for issues) but this hurts. I knew it was bad when my friends at the bar on Friday were wondering if I was ok because I wouldn’t turn in one direction. My dad says to give it some more time before I have it looked at, but I think that I need to do something about it really soon. I can’t sleep because it hurts when I lie certain ways, and I think it is causing minor head aches. Minor head aches are one thing, but for someone who gets migraines because of minor head aches I have to worry. Thankfully I have only had one incident today when i had to take my migraine meds. A good night sleep right about now would be really nice!

This Weekend

I went to see The Dark Knight with Danny in Union Square Saturday night. We went for some food and a few drinks afterward. The movie was good, but not awesome. Until the last Batman movie I hadn’t been a huge fan of the franchise anyway, so the new ones are converting me over!

Today was more relaxing. I cleaned up my apartment, and did some reorganization on my computer. It took all week to move 1.4+ terabytes of data around on my newly upgraded Drobo. I like the unit, but performance is sucking big time after I put the 4th 1TB drive in. It stinks attached to my Mini or as a NAS. I don’t know what the deal is.

Other than that I relaxed. Having some down time since the weeks are hectic is nice!

Friday Out

Last night I went out with friends for Lukes birthday. We went to Windfall and had a good time. We ended a bit earlier than I thought but fun was still had. Luke usually is out late so for his B-day i figured a late one, but he got blasted early and headed to another bar. He is always fun to hang with. My neck was killing me so I headed out by 8. Yes that is really early, but it isn’t so bad when you start at 5pm sharp!

I got to see a bunch of friends from my old job that I hadn’t seen in a few weeks. I hadn’t gone out in about 2 weeks since work was crazy and i was tired, but I couldn’t stay away for Luke’s b-day. I am hoping to get out again next week with that group.

DroboShare and Drive Storage

Since John turned me onto the Drobo I have been a huge fan. I finally finished filling all 4 drive bays with 1TB drives a few weeks ago. Buying drives over the course of a few months defrayed the cost a bit. Last week I realized that if I want to have all 2.7TB of usable storage in one volume I will need to reformat the unit. Apparently the original firmware could only do up to 2TB volumes. Newer ones will do up to 16TB so I can add storage later and not have to worry about formatting the volume.

In order to reformat the Drobo I needed to move all the data currently on it off onto other storage while I performed the reconfiguration. The moving of the data off the Drobo took about 3 days. The reformatting of the unit took 15 minutes. While I was moving the data off the drive I realized that I would rather have that storage as NAS instead of directly connected to my Mac Mini desktop. When I was out earlier this morning I went over to J&R and picked up a DroboShare NAS attachment. The setup was just as easy as setting up the Drobo. I also like the fact that it piggy backs its power off of the Drobo.

Now that my Drobo is formatted for 8TB I can expand disks over the next few years without worrying about doing this exercise again. I am now copying all the data back onto the Drobo. It is slightly faster to do this by direct attaching the drive to my computer. Once I am done uploading the data, I will plug the drive back into the NAS head and my home network storage setup will be complete, for now. I want to see how long it takes me to use up 2.7TB?

The next big question is what to do with all my older external hard drives I have accumulated? I have many. I have about 5 250GB drives, and two 750GB external drives. It is allot, but I got the 750’s to replace some 250’s, and the 250’s never really went away. Once everything is on the Drobo I want to get rid of the 250’s and just have the two 750’s around for backups. And only a few years ago I thought it was allot to manage the data on one or two 18gb SCSI drives!

The Near Disaster

My Tumi book-bag ripped today. The strap ripped right off the bag as i was walking out of my office on my way home. My quick reaction caught on the bag before it fell into the street. I am not so happy about that since the bag was not so cheap and it is only a little over a year old. I need to bring it in to be repaired. According to the Tumi website the type of problem I am having is covered under warrantee.

3 Hours Wasn’t So Bad

After what felt like a really long time the new iPhone 3G came out today. I had mixed thoughts of the first generation iPhone, even though I bought one the second day they were out. I also returned it two days later. I also tried again a few months later, and yet again returned it. The first generation phone had some limitations that I couldn’t get over. The new 3G version however is a different story. Really, it is a different story. I am writting about it in a future post so I won’t cover it here. Neadless to say when the new iPhone came out, I wanted to get it right away. I have been growing warry of my Nokia E61i as the weeks pass by. The launch of the iPhone 3G couldn’t have happened any faster!

My plan was to get up a little early and head over to an AT&T Wireless store near my office. I was hoping that the line at an AT&T store wouldn’t be too bad. If it was I could always just leave and goto work, since it was only a 3 block walk. All in all I was willing to commit about 2 hours to the ordeal, and if it looked crazy I would goto plan B. Plan B was to go the 5th Ave Apple store that is open 24 hours sometime later in the evening with the hopes of getting a shorter line at night.

I got to the AT&T store about 7:40AM and there was already about 50 people in line. I found out later that if I got there around 7 it would have been more like 5 people in front of me. I waited in line with everyone else for about 45 minutes. The line was moving slowly but I saw progress. Then an AT&T rep comes out and said that they were already out of 16GB Black models. Of course that was the one that I wanted so I was not too happy. I figured I could still get a White 16GB model and it would be ok. A few minutes later another AT&T employee came out and said that by the time they got to our area of the line they most likely would be out of all 16GB models. At that point I said forget this, and went to work. All told it was about an hour of time invested, but I made it to work before 9AM so all was well.

My original plan was to go home after work and come back to the Apple Store on 5th Ave really late (I figured 10-11PM would be late enough that most of the line would have dissipated). I hadn’t been sleeping much this week since I had some sort of minor bug. Nothing crazy but I didn’t really want to go back out again later. Instead I headed out of work a little early and went up to the Apple Store. Now this plan was only good for me since the day turned out to not be really hot. It was actually very nice and comfortable outside so waiting in line in the sun wasn’t so bad. if it would have been a scorcher day my plans would have been radically different. New toy vs staying cool, I am siding with cool. There is limits to my craziness.

The line there was really long (see photos below), but as the security guy said it was the shortest it was all day. The security guy I spoke to estimated the line from where I was to be around 2 hours. I didn’t have anywhere else to be, and I wanted the phone so I decided to see how long I could hold out on line. The thing about me is that I don’t like lines. I get that from my dad. If I could order something online I would, but if you want something right away you sometimes have to brave the lines. I once waited in an airport 11 hours, and stuck on a plane another 9 hours or so another time. That was just to get home, so waiting 2 hours for something I actually wanted was worth some time. It is crazy rationalization but not the craziest I have made, so what the heck.

To keep myself occupied I listened to my iPod, read the news via Avantgo on my E61i, and just did allot of people watching. A line like the one I was on really brought out the diversity of the city. It was interesting just to watch and listen to my surroundings. The security guy turned out to be right and wrong at the same time about the wait. It was about two hours from when I started until I got into the actual Apple Store.

Once inside however the process was no where near finished. The store itself was pretty empty compared to other normal days that I have been there. They split people into two new lines. One at each end of the store. Each line went just as slow as outside. At least now I was in AC and near a bathroom if needed. Of course it wasn’t so hot outside so the AC wasn’t such a big deal.

iPhone 3G Launch Waiting in Line at the Apple Store on 5th Ave - 5

Once I actually got to a sales guy was when my problems really started. I knew going into this purchase that I might have a problem. The issue was that back in March I changed phone numbers on my AT&T Wireless account. Now what AT&T said they could do and actually do when they switched numbers wasn’t exactly the same thing. I was told that this could be a simple change and that it wouldn’t affect my contract in any way. Turned out it wasn’t. In the end most issues were resolved, but not everything. What had happened was instead of replacing my current number with the new one, they actually created a new line on my account and then removed the old one. That messed up my roll over minutes, contract end date, equipment replacement eligibility date, price plans, etc. The representatives I spoke to on the phone were actually very helpful in fixing most of my issues compared to the mess the people in the store caused. They fixed my contract end date back to when it was supposed to be. They got me back on the really good data plan that I had that was no longer offered. They could have tried to work on the roll over minutes, but since I was moving to an unlimited voice plan I told them it didn’t matter. I was more worried about the contract date than anything else. Unfortunately it turns out the date that was really important, the date I can get equipment at a discounted price wasn’t touched. I didn’t know it was important until later. In June I noticed that even though my contract was up in December I wasn’t eligible for a new phone until March 09. That didn’t make sense since even though my account was messed up in March, I never actually bought equipment at a discounted price. I called AT&T again and they did some research. They said that yes the date was messed up and that it was in fact an error on their end. They read me back the notes they put on my account basically saying that when I wanted new equipment it was ok to discount it for me. They did caution me that I may or may not need to call customer service when buying the new equipment. That was the reason I tried going to the AT&T store first, vs the Apple Store. So when I got to the end of the line and ran into a problem with AT&T’s computer it wasn’t a surprise. The question became, was I going to argue and end up having to call AT&T and wait on line for ages with them, or worse lose my place on the Apple line and have the last 2 1/2 hours of waiting be for nothing. I figured AT&T would have a huge queue on the phone on a day like today, so I opted to say screw it and just pay the extra money for the phone. I will call next week and see if I can get that money back, but I don’t think it will happen. I chalk the extra cost up to wanting to have immediate gratification!

After the issue with the AT&T price was over, my issues weren’t done. They actually had an issue approving my credit card. That was a total surprise to me, but the issue turned out to be the wireless credit card unit the guy checking me out used was having problems connecting to his wireless system. A few retries later I was all set. I browsed the store a bit more and bought a screen protector and a clear case. Once all my purchases were done, I headed home. The line looked a bit shorter as I was leaving, but it was at least a two hour wait at 8:30 at night.

All told my entire ordeal took about 3 hours. Was it worth it? So far I think so, but for me my mobile is one of the tools I use all the time so having a good one that works is critical. For the past several months I haven’t had one that worked right. I also got the model I wanted, the 16GB Black one! My thoughts on day to day use of the new phone will come after I use it next week. For now I am syncing it up with my stuff, and resting my feet!
