Baby Watch 2009

As odd luck would have it my sister and one of my best friends are both expecting new babies this week. My sister is off tomorrow morning to have the baby (its planned), and my friends wife is going to be induced by the end of the week if theirs doesn’t show up. Hopefully if all goes well I will be an uncle again tomorrow by lunch time. All I had to do was not drive my sister crazy!

The big dilemma for me is what to get as a baby gift. The stuffed animal collection I liked to get from FAO apparently discontinued the middle sized option that I got for my Niece & Nephew. I don’t want to risk going with the really huge one, but the small one is kinda small. What is an uncle to be to do? I will buy the customary bottle of liquor. Yes a baby needs a nice bottle of scotch. Well, the plan for that is to get one the day they are born and give it to them when they turn 21. I got the idea from my dad when the toast at my Bar Mitzvah was using the same bottle that my great uncle gave to my parents and they toasted at my Bris. Since that gift is not really functional for a two decades I need something more current. I am going to have to scour the internet tomorrow for something suitable. I am not sure when I can get out to see the new little one. Apparently most if not all family is banned for the first week so they can all settle in, but after that I am not sure.

As for my friend, I also await word when the time comes. As of this morning it the little guy can’t come fast enough but he is taking his time.

Friday Travel Day

Friday was a bit hectic for me. I went to the NJ office where most of my team is. I was going with a new Project Manager, and two other people from the mid town office who work on the same project. One guy was new, one never met the rest of the team and the other hadn’t seen everyone in almost a year so it was nice getting everyone together to talk. We spent over 3 hours going over stuff. It went really well. We all then went out for lunch after the visitors got a tour of the facility. Those tours never get old for me.

The downside of the travel day was I was only in front of my computer for about an hour and that was in a conference room for a meeting going over a spread sheet. I was only able to read and respond to a few of the many emails I received this week. Since I am going to my sisters tonight I won’t be able to try to catch up from my backlog until Monday!

Because of the tour and lunch we didn’t head back to the city till almost 3. By the time we got to mid town it was well after 4. I ended up going home and finished up some work there before going out to meet up with friends for drinks. I was delayed in getting out because I waited to sync up my new iPhone 3GS before I left. It arrived in the mail while I was out during the day.

Drinks were cool. Meet up with Luke, Stanley, & Danny to name a few. I didn’t stay out too late so I was happy! All in all a busy and productive day.

Lunch Out

Today was a work in the office day.  I got lunch with a vendor.  We hadn't spoken in several months so it was good to catch up and get him up to speed with my current needs.  Some work lunches can be painful or painfully boring.  Thankfully this one wasn't.

I thought my meeting schedule was relatively light but enough stuff came up to make me think twice about that assessment by the time the day ended.  I don't know why I ever think that because when I do I always learn to regret it.

On the way home I grabbed a hair cut.  Then it was home for a quick dinner.  I was tired so nothing major went on this evening.

Puttering Around The House

I got up early and couldn't go back to sleep. Thankfully I felt better than I did yesterday. I cleaned up my apartment. I also decided I didn't like my Desk Reorg and removed the extra Apple Display. I moved my Media Center iMac back to where it was last week and took my Dell monitor and plugged it into my bigger iMac. I am still using a dual display setup but I took apart my Laptop station setup. I just didn't use it.

The Apple Display I have is starting to show its age so I don't feel right selling it on eBay. As Kai likes to point out anything I sell generally is in top notch condition. I take pride in my reputation (and the added resale value good condition brings) so I won't sell it. I think it is still good enough to give to my parents. They have a 19" LCD I bought for my dad's birthday a few years ago. Maybe they will like the upgrade.

Puerto Rican Day Parade?

In the afternoon I figured I would take advantage of the good weather and head into Manhattan. I wanted to swing by the Apple Store and head into Central Park for a bit. Little did I know my plans were doomed to failure. When I got off the N train and started walking up the steps I saw a lady with a Puerto Rican flag. I immediately thought is today the Puerto Rican Day Parade? Then I saw like 10 other people with Puerto Rican flags by the time I made it to the last flight of stairs to the street. There was no doubt in my mind the parade was today. Now I wondered does my memory serve that the parade goes up 5th ave right by the park? When I got to the street my memory was proven correct. 5th Ave was completely blocked off.

My plans were toasted. I should have gotten back in the subway and gone home, but I didn’t. I walked around for a bit since it was a really nice day. Since it was getting late I ended up heading over to the Outback for some dinner before I headed home. I love that place and I don’t go too often. It was good. I walked back to the subway and headed home afterwards. Granted my plans didn’t pan out (well if you call them plans) but I had a good day anyway.

I went home, finished my laundry, and relaxed a bit. Now I am off to bed since I have a meeting first thing in the morning.

More Blog Tweaking

After a really bad night sleep I decided to lounge around on the computer this afternoon. I ended up looking through he WordPress Plugin directory and found a bunch of new plugins for my site. I found some cool analytics plugins. I also added some nifty plugins that does some magic and suggests related posts like the one someone is reading. I find it interesting to tweak the site to see what else I can do with it. Totally useless time spent but fun!

At night I ended up going to see The Hangover with Danny. The movie was very funny! We grabbed dinner afterward, but I refrained from drinking. I was happy to get home at a reasonable hour.

Desk Reorg

At home tonight I decided to reorganize my desk, again. About two weeks ago I moved things around on my desk(s). I have two desks and a little desk/cart arranged in an L shape since I can’t get the middle piece of my desk system in the color lament of the desks I have. So I have a make shift L. It actually looks pretty good. I love my Anthro Desks! I have been tweaking the setup since I got the smaller desk I used to make the L. Two weeks ago I took away my setup for my work laptop since i thought it was cluttered and put my media center iMac there in stead. I ended up not really using the monitor I freed up from the laptop setup so it was just sitting there idle.

Yesterday I got the idea to try a 2nd monitor on my iMac setup again. I also had the need for that laptop setup (using the laptop only wasn’t cutting it) so I decided to reorganize everything. I moved the media center iMac back to the center part of the L, returned the Dell monitor to setup my laptop again, and then broke out my old Apple 23″ cinema display to use as my second monitor alongside my 24″ iMac. I am not going to really be able to sell the Cinema Display since it is 3 years old so I might as well try to use it.

I know it sounds like allot of monitors, and it kinda is. But I accumulated everything over time. I actually have extra stuff I need to get rid of or give away that didn’t even make it to this configuration. I will use the main display on my 24″ iMac for personal stuff, the 23″ display on that iMac now sports a full screen XP VM that I can do work on. My 20″ iMac will remain as my media center and used for video processing and controlling my Apple TV & xbox 360 media centers. The other setup will be for my work laptop so I can do other work stuff on it.

Once I clean up everything I will take another Panorama picture of everything. Right now check out the before Panorama photos I took a few months ago when I still had my Macbook setup.

Spring Cleaning with Ebay

Yesterday I sold my Nokia E71. I know, I use an iPhone 3G. I also bought a E71 a few months ago to play around with. I was hoping to be able to switch between iPhone and E71. I know, I bought and returned a previous Nokia E71 for that same reason. I wanted to give the Nokia more than a day trial. The verdict was it is a great phone but even with its drawbacks I like the iPhone and even when I did use the E71 I would often switch back to the iPhone. So since I am currently on a sell my extra stuff kick I sold the Nokia on Craigslist.

So far in the past month I have let go of my Macbook, and the Nokia. I loved the Macbook, but the reality was I wasn’t using it so I opted for the much faster iMac desktop. I am even contemplating letting go of my HP netbook since I have my work laptop that is an ultra portable. I am also looking to offload my 160gig iPod. When I got the iPhone I thought I would slowly stop needing an iPod. That is exactly what happened. With my new 16gig USB key and 16gig SD card in my laptop I no longer need the 160gig iPod for any portable file storage. That means it is getting wiped and put up for sale.

I am also in the process of selling my old Airport Extreme base station, but that is only because I upgraded. That sale will recoup half the cost of the new one. Man ebay you are my enabler for buying new stuff!

What I am not selling is my old 23″ cinema display. It found a new home as my second monitor on my iMac. I need to rummage through my storage bins to see if there is anything else I want part with. Don’t you smell spring cleaning in the air.
