Still Findable On The Web

My cousin Synde said that she googled her family and up came my blog. I think that is pretty cool. But that poses a problem. I don’t use first and last names. I may have used their first names in one past and last name in another one. if that isn’t it I don’t know how they would come up on my blog. I try not to be that conspicuous on the site. She was surprised that I had a blog. I could swear that I told her about it. Her husband knew about it, but I told him about it a long time ago.

I found the reference on the site that she found. I did use the last name once. I have since removed it. I am not a fan of posting last names on the site. Anonymity is nice for a bit. That being said I am making other changes to the site. I am slowly making the Powerpedia domain the only one for this blog. Why you ask? It’s whois information is hidden. Why is that important? I don’t want crazies knowing who I am. It is probably paranoid behavior, but I think it is worth the few bucks the anonymous registration cost.

I also changed the theme of the site back to my old theme. The new one was nice, but I didn’t like the fact that the center column with all my posts was not flexibly in size when you resized your browser. The posts were squished into a small space. My old (current) theme adjusts the posts based on the size of the browser window. Much nicer!

Powerpedia, The Missing Weeks

I have been horrible at writing this July. It is not because I had nothing to write about. I also probably had time to write. I just didn’t feel compelled to sit down and put anything on paper/digital file. Things have been busy both personally and professionally this month. Some huge projects at work all have major milestones coming up very soon. I am trying to get ready for vacation this friday, and about a half a dozen other things have happened.

I have added a few posts for the past week and a half. I back dated some of them so each post was dated near when stuff actually happened. I know it is cheating, but it is easier that way!

Sold A Mini

Kai bought one of my Mac Mini’s last week. He was eyeing the Mac for a while, and I think me selling Chris my old powerbook sent him over the edge. I got a decent resale price, and Kai got a deal off of what he would have paid in the store. Win Win! From what he says he is already a fan, and doesn’t know why more people don’t use OS X. I agree with him.

He wont admit it, but his mini is now his primary home computer. Next up is converting Jayson. Converting Danny may be a lost cause!

Another Traveler

My friend John has decided to come along to Cancun for 3 days. I was surprised that he is going since he never said he wanted to travel when I asked all my friends constantly over the past year who wants to go some where, and secondly he wasn’t invited!

Our group of friends are very open about stuff. No one really invites anyone. The word is just passed around and it is implied that anyone is invited. If you don’t find out about a gathering it is your fault for not communicating to someone and finding out what is going on. We are weird like that.

After hearing of our travel plans, John found time to travel. I think the free hotel may have been a motivating factor for him! Not wanting to pass up another drinking buddy we (I, since jay didn’t make the reservations) made sure John is not sleeping on the floor of the hotel! he will meet us later in the day friday at the hotel. By the time he gets there jay and I plan on being tan at the ocean.

Beach Friday & Surprise Party

Last Friday I took the day off from work to goto the beach with my family. My parents have been going to the same beach club for over 20 years. When I was younger I would go with them every summer. Now a days they are lucky if I go once a summer. Last week was a special case. My sister had setup a surpise party for my Mom’s 60th birthday (it was that sunday). She had a bunch of family friend visit that day at the beach (my mom knew about that part). What she didn’t realize was that about 50 other people would show up in the early evening while my mom took my niece to the pool. She was totally surprised. The party was fun. There were a bunch of people I didn’t know (no mom, meeting someone once a decade and expecting me to remember who they are does not constitute knowing someone), a whole bunch of friends I knew and some family I haven’t seen in a while.

It was a good night. the day at the beach was rough. it was very hot, there were 5 kids there under 3, and I was getting a head ache. I was able to take a nap, so I felt better for the party! I was amazed at the stuff my sister cooked for this thing.

Beer Garden Sunday

Went to the beer garden again today. I got permission to not goto the beach for my mom’s actual birthday (by her) so I went to the garden when Jay and John called. We had a good time again. We ate sausage, drank (one drink for me since I was not recovered from friday), played cards and hung out. I decided you have a gambling problem when you play poker with rocks when you have no money to play with.

After poker we all played Spades. I haven’t played in years. John showed Jay and Gretchen how to play. We now have a cool hang out and drink card game for no money. I mean if we want to bet we will play holdum. Not sure how exactly to spell it.

I was late for dinner with my family, but so were they. We had a decent meal at a japanese restaurant near my sisters house.

the only other thing to note about today was that I may have destroyed a brand new shirt by getting stuck between the doors on an E train. I had black marks up and down my arm and the sleeve. It was nasty, but I made the train. It was worth it:)

Scuba Day

Last Saturday I took my Scuba class. It was a 8+ hour day of study and pool time. In a nutshell it was allot of hard work. My ears still have some issue equalizing the first time I goto depth. I really wont know how I take it in the ocean until get in it. The pool is different since you cannot go that deep. I ended up getting a migraine during the last piece of the class. I was able to complete all the scuba pieces of it, but I got a bit sick after that. I tried to do the last part (treading water for 10 minutes) but I was shivering and freezing. The instructor said I could come back later in the week and complete it. the pool was closing very soon and I didn’t have time to warm up and try again. I got home from the class that night and went right to bed.

later that next week I did my tread water test. that was the easiest part of the whole class. I was able to just lie in the pool and not touch the side or bottom for 10 minutes. All I have left is my 4 open water dives. I hope to do them all in Cancun next week.

Addicted To Outlook No More

If Microsoft Outlook was a drug, for me I think it would be crack. When it came out in 96/97 (i can’t remember exactly when) I was addicted after about a day or two. It was by far better than anything else out there at the time. I went to great lengths to use it. When I was at BM in 1997 we used CC Mail. I went extraordinary measures to get outlook to work while still using the CC Mail system. Our mail admin (a friend of mine at the time) almost had kittens when she realized I was using a MAPI conduit getting CC Mail into Outlook. I had to promise never to tell anyone else that it was possible.

When I couldn’t use an exchange server somewhere (i don’t remember what job) I ended up building my own so I could have outlook with all my contacts and stuff both at home and at work.

Back in the day (meaning 2000 or so for this conversation) it was great. I would use it daily. it would be my central program no matter where I was or what I was doing. Email being a lifeline when I traveled and a necessity in every other job I have had.

Over the past 3 years (wow it has been exactly 3 years this month) I have gone from a curious interest in Mac’s to using one as virtually my primary machine at work, and almost exclusively at home. One problem I had was no outlook. First I used OS 9 classic outlook. it was a poor replacement for the real thing. My addiction stuck and I always went back to my PC for good old comfy outlook. The problem was around the time I started getting really into Mac’s I found that Outlook was not the great program it used to be. I was still stuck on it, but it would crash, perform slowly, etc. From XP to 2003 was a great improvement in looks, but everything else was horrible. yet I was addicted to using 2003. It sucked, and I knew it yet I still used it.

Late last year I bought Office 2004 for the mac. Entourage then became my poor alternative for Outlook. When I was on my Mac I would use it, but I still always went back to Outlook. My Treo (or any other Palm or Pocket PC I had) would sync with outlook. Whatever computer had my primary outlook PST file on it became my “main PC”.

Then Mac OS 10.4 came out. That along with the missing sync and a few other utilities allowed me to start weaning off of Outlook, and by extension Windows in general. First I moved everything into Entourage, but that became a similar drug like Outlook. It was bad, and yet I found I had no choice to use it, so I was stuck on it. I found some utilities that would sync apple’s iCal and Address book to Entourage and used that for the past 3 weeks. I have had so much data corruption because of the syncing I gave up on that idea.

I stopped using Entourage for my email last week, and moved over to Apple Mail. Integration makes me move programs. the integration between mail, address book, and ichat is amazing. All that was left was the PIN functionality I used in Outlook and more recently Entourage.

So today I start what I consider my final rehab. I backed up entourage and did one last synch to iCal and Address book. I then took my Treo and did a sync to those programs instead of Entourage. I hope this is the first day of my long future of not using Microsoft PIM’s. Even if my company goes to Exchange I can still use iCal. This solution isn’t without some trade offs. Some of them I haven’t even addressed yet, but I hope it is better than what I was doing before.

I haven’t done a sync to outlook in weeks. I only use it for IMAP mail when I am on a windows box. My PST files do contain email archives and contact archives going back to 1997, but I am using other programs to export that data to other formats that are less proprietary.

For now I am happy with my “rehab” of address book and ical. We shall see if I break down and go back, but I am hopeful I don’t.

Half Day

I took a half day off from work today. I had time I needed to burn off, and I wanted to go sign up for a Scuba class. I am now all signed up for a one day (8 1/2 hour) class next Saturday. I have my reading material sitting beside me. I know I have to read it, but like all school work I am procrastinating.

I also got a mask, snorkel, fins and other accessories I will need for the class. I will write more about it later.

Sailing

Today about 20 (or so) of us from work took a half a day and went sailing. It was a team building exercise. I normally think that sort of activity is cheesy but I had a great time. We learned allot about sailing, and we got to do work on a real sail boat. We went on a 70+ year old boat. it was an 80′ or so boat if I remember correctly. It was cool.

Granted there was a crew that did the real work. The sail boat had an engine that we used for most of the trip since the wind was not so great for about half the trip. Other than that I had a blast. I learned (i think we did) what the poop deck was. I answered the age old question of “is left or right port?”. I got to play with a real radar system. I got to say “i have the con” and actually mean it. I also got to ask if we could fire the deck gun, but we didn’t have one. that would have been cool too.

We sailed up the Hudson for a while. then we turned around and headed down past Governors island, the Statue of Liberty and a bunch of oil barges.

I don’t normally get motion sick, but I took a Dramamine pill just in case today. On our holiday party boat cruise I didn’t feel well so I wanted to play it safe. Turns out I think the holiday party issues was just a migraine. No issues for me today.

The weather was cool and cloudy so the temperature on the water was perfect. I think everyone had a good time, even those that were not “boat people”. I for one had a blast, and it was actually work!
