The Story of Saying No to Sushi

The last few years I spent living in New York City and working at Thomson Reuters before moving to England I was part of a team that, for most of my time there, was based in the same office as me. When I first started in NY, that wasn’t the case. I worked in an office where nobody I directly collaborated with was present. Eventually, the team grew, and most of the group ended up in our New York office. Today i am somewhere in the middle with much a the team in London but the people i daily communicate with spread out all over.

Having the team all together brought a lot of positive outcomes. Group meetings were more effective since we were often in person, which was a nice change from the typical phone meetings. One of the best parts was going out for lunch or coffee together. But by the time our lunches became a regular thing, I was trying to be heathier. Going out to eat several times a week didn’t align with my health goals, so I’d often skip lunch outings and opt for a sandwich in the cafeteria instead. However, I made up for it by joining the team for coffee once or twice a day.

The one exception to my lunch rule was sushi. It was relatively healthy, and I enjoyed it. Or it was healthy enough and I rationalised it as being ok. Whenever the team went out for sushi, I would usually join them. Over time, this became a bit of a pattern. I’d ask where they were going for lunch, and if it was anything other than sushi, I’d politely decline and stick to my sandwich. But if it was sushi, I’d think about it and often end up going with them.

That’s when my friend Faisal caught on to my pattern. If I declined to join for lunch, he’d jokingly suggest, “What if we go to sushi?” I’d grumble, and we’d end up at the sushi place. He started doing this more frequently, and I’d tell him they didn’t need to change plans just for me. I really didn’t want them to. But he would insist it was fine because several others loved sushi anyway. So, I’d curse him (playfully, sort of), and off we’d go—rinse and repeat.

It was delicious. Now, my current team is full of great people, and we get along well, but we’re rarely in the same office. Even when we are, it’s so hectic that we don’t have time for lunch outings. In a way, that’s good because I’m not tempted, but I do miss those sushi lunches with my New York team. I did recently get added to a chat group specifically for deciding were to go out for lunch to. I haven’t yet participated but you never know!

Best Sushi I Ever Had

MC & I meet up with one of her cousins and his girlfriend and went to Sushi Nakazawa.  I have wanted to go since MC pointed out an article about the place was opening.  She knew I liked the Jiro Dreams of Sushi documentary and highlighted the connection.  The problem was we never got reservations, until today.

Reservations were late so MC and I went back  to Employees Only for a drink first.  It was nearby so we figured we would try it again.  We were lucky and it wasn’t too crowded.  We got seats at the bar.  I had two delicious Whiskey Smash’s.  I would drink more of them if they weren’t as time intensive to make myself.  MC was more adventurous and picked something interesting off the menu.  For round two she let our awesome bartender pick something out for her.  Both drinks were good however I still loved the Whiskey Smash.  After drinks we walked over to Sushi Nakazawa.

Dinner was better than expected and that is saying a lot since we had high hopes.  By far the best sushi experience I have ever had.  I opted for the Sake pairing to go along with the dinner.  It was a good choice.  MC opted for wine however there was enough Sake tasting to go around.  Dinner was a big splurge however totally worth it.

I will try not to discuss the piece of cake and two cup cakes I may or may not have had at Magnolia bakery afterwards.

Overall a fantastic evening.  The only downside would be the Uber fail.  I tried Uber for the first time and the driver canceled on me before they could pick us up.  Ended up being less of an issue since the Subway showed up quick.  I will give Uber another try at some point.  Hoping they are more reliable than one Friday late night instance cancelation.

Sushi Tasting Menu

Tonight MC and I finally used a Travelzoo discount MC got me for Fathers Day.  It was something like 75% off a 6 course tasting menu at a very well reviewed sushi restaurant.  I didn’t know until last night it was in the Katano Hotel were Joe & Karen got married.  We scheduled for our baby sitter to stay late with Teagan and we went out to dinner.

The location in relation to our offices wasn’t optimal since there was no direct subway so we ended up walking in 90+ degree heat to the place.  The exercise was great but the heat was brutal.

I didn’t realize it was a tasting menu when we I got the present.  Generally I am wary of them because i am picky.  This time it was generally good.  There was something for me to eat in every course.  I was even a bit adventurous and tried some new stuff.  I am not a fan of eggplant.  The food was very good.  I was just still hungry after the meal before desert.  I ended up ordering 3 pieces of ale cart sushi.  I even splurged on a $13 piece of fatty tuna.  It was well worth it.  Very tasty.  The entire meal was very tasty.  I am not sure if we would do it again especially since the full price meal would have been a huge bill, but we were both glad we did it.

Dinner and a Movie

MC’s parents are staying with us for a few days  since they are without power due to the storm.  It has been a bit cramped since I am working from home due to the storm but it is nice to have them.  They help with taking care of Teagan, and MC doesn’t get to see them as often as I can see my parents since hers lives about an hour and a half away.

Since they are here and they dont know when they will have power, MC had the idea that they could watch the baby Friday night and we could go out and grab some dinner and catch a movie.  We haven’t done that alone since Teagan was born so it is almost 7 weeks.  We were both excited since we would love a night out and we have wanted to go see Argo.  Up until her parents came to visit we figured we would never get to see  it in the movies and would catch it on DVD.

We opted for an early movie and dinner afterward.  The movie was great.  Probably one of the best stories I have seen in a long time.  It was very well done and worth it as our first date out.  We went to the theater on Austin St and then went to a Sushi Yasu place across the street from the Theater   We wanted to try a new place and we were in the mood for sushi.  The restaurant was nice but the sushi was not as good as our favorite place in Woodside (TJ”s) or the more upscale Moca Asian Bistro around the corner.  After dinner we went to Martha’s for coffee and desert before heading back home.

It was a nice quick night out.  We were both glad to get away even though MC talked to her mom 3 times while we were out.  We might go out again tonight but we aren’t sure.

Friday September 7th

Not a huge amount to report that I want to write about publicly on the Internet, so I wrote a private blog post. I work from home today because I needed to have some scheduling flexibility. Thankfully in the end I didn’t need it, but it’s good to know it’s available when needed.

I ordered takeout sushi for lunch today. I was also able to play a little bit with Cisco and jabber. One of the guys at work and I tested to make sure that it functions and I can receive chat messages when the app is closed on my iPhone and iPad. It will be pretty cool when we all start using it.

We do not have any specific plans yet for this weekend. We are hoping to be pretty low key, since the baby is due Tuesday. Depending on how MC feels we might get a dinner out one night. Other than that it’s vegging and making sure we get anything we need to do around the apartment done.

Meetup With Gus

Today I met up with Gus after work to grab some drinks and dinner. He emailed me a week or so ago seeing if I wanted to meet up before the baby came. Since I was doing that with a lot of people anyway it was perfect timing.

Both of us were able to get out relatively early and we met up at a sushi place near Union Square that he highly recommended. The food was pretty good, and I tried unfiltered sake for the first time. MC and I have tried regular cold sake but never the unfiltered. Gus insisted we try it and it turned out to be very tasty.

It was good to see him and hang out. We talked about a numerous topics and were able to get out relatively early so I was able to get home at a decent hour. I was glad for that since I had been up since 5:45 to do a call with China.
