Football Team Selection

If you’re American, no, I’m not talking about that kind of football. I’m talking about the kind that everyone else in the world calls football—or association football. For most of my life, though, I called it soccer.

When I was little, my parents encouraged me to be active and take up a sport. I wasn’t naturally good at sports, but I did play soccer from around age five until I was about 11. I wasn’t the best player, but I knew how to play and genuinely enjoyed it.

Despite playing soccer, I never really followed professional sports. Sure, I had favorite teams in American football, baseball, and hockey, but I didn’t actively watch games or check the standings. I never even had a basketball team. Among all the major U.S. sports, I liked hockey the most. There was something about it—maybe the fast-paced, low-scoring nature of the game. You had to stay focused on the action, even during quieter moments, because if you looked away, you might miss a goal. Baseball was just too slow for me, and I could never get into basketball. American football never fully grabbed my attention either—I’d watch, but I was never really invested.

When I moved to England, not much changed at first. In the first year or two, I didn’t follow any sports, just like I hadn’t in America. But as I started chatting with people, I used sports as a conversation starter. I would ask if they preferred football or cricket. To my surprise, the question was wrong—the real question, they said, was football or rugby. Even though it wasn’t the perfect icebreaker, I learned about people’s favorite teams and why they supported them.

Out of curiosity, I eventually watched an England women’s national team game, and to my surprise, I really enjoyed it. The same reasons I liked ice hockey seemed to apply to football as well. It’s a low-scoring game, and if you step away for a snack, you might miss a goal. But the real challenge came when I tried to pick a team to follow. Talking to locals, I noticed that many people supported a team based on family tradition or where they grew up. As an expat in London, I didn’t have that kind of loyalty. There were three Premier League teams that could be considered “local” to me, and one was particularly popular in my neighborhood.

Some colleagues suggested I support Manchester United, but these were colleagues from India, not locals. I had to explain that living in London, I wanted a team that felt more local.

A lot of people in my neighborhood were West Ham United fans, and their stadium was nearby in Stratford. But I never really felt drawn to West Ham, even though I had nothing against them. Supporting them would’ve been the easy choice, given how popular they were locally.

I knew a couple of people who supported Tottenham, and their history intrigued me. I seriously considered them. I also had friends who supported Arsenal, and I considered them too. For about two years, I was torn between Tottenham and Arsenal, though for much of that time, it was more of an academic debate since I wasn’t watching much football.

Then, the Women’s Euros and the World Cup came along. We watched the England women’s team, and we really enjoyed the games. We also watched several matches from the men’s World Cup. By this spring, I knew I had to make a decision.

In the end, two factors helped me choose. Between Arsenal and Tottenham, Arsenal seemed to have more of a historical edge—by that, I mean they had old records of winning streaks that stood out. Tottenham had always been a strong team, but they didn’t have that same kind of legacy. It’s hard to explain, but it just felt like Arsenal had more history behind them.

The final decision came when I was out at lunch with the girls one day. We talked about it, and since it was going to be a family decision, I let them weigh in. They agreed on Arsenal, and just like that, we became Arsenal fans.

We don’t have any team gear yet, and we haven’t been to a game either, but I’m looking to get tickets for one of the women’s matches at the Emirates this fall. I think it’ll be the perfect introduction for the girls to live football since they’ve already seen matches from the Euros and World Cup, both men’s and women’s.

I was surprised at how much I’ve come to enjoy watching football. When I think about it, the similarities to hockey explain a lot of it. Now, we’ll see if I keep up with the games during the season.

I wrote this over the summer. I figured it was time to post since we are going to our first match tomorrow. More on that another day.

We Are Inching Closer to Following Football

I think the whole family is slowly getting into football. The girls convinced me to stay up a bit beyond their bedtime to watch the beginning of the game. I did however they really did not get to watch much. Their interest was good.

I can see some aspects of the game that keeps things interesting. Even after the girls are in bed now I have the game on the BBC! We will know I am hooked when I purchase team swag. I haven’t, yet…

W Sister Short on Sports

The other day we were going out to a birthday party.  M called up to the girls: “Girls get your trainers on for the birthday party since there will be sports.” The girls both groaning a reply “we don’t like sports”.

The first thing that pops into my mind is that they are totally my children.

Photo from me during my first year playing Soccer (ie Football) since I don’t typically post pictures of the girls.

My New Jawbone UP

Last year when Jawbone announced the UP I thought it was a super cool idea and I got one.  I wore it every day for a month or so until it broke.  My UP was one of the many defective units that ended up being recalled by Jawbone.  Jawbone was very cool and I got all my money back so there was no hard feelings.

I still thought the idea was great but the alternatives (Nike Fuelband or the Fitbit) didn’t apeal to me.  The fitbit clips onto your clothes so i wasn’t a fan of the idea.  The fuelband doesn’t track sleep and it needed charging often compaired to 10 days with the UP.  The Fuelband is also big.  I was pleasantly suprised when Jawbone reintroduced the UP (even thought they said they would I am always skeptical until it happens).  I was in the Grand Central Station Apple Store getting a gift card for my Niece for the holidays and I saw the UP, so I got myself one.

I am excited to see how much it works.  I like the ability to track sleep and activity still but they added better food tracking.  I hope to write more about it once I use it a bit.

The Big Game

I am told there is a big NFL playoff game today. I am skeptical since my dad is on a plane going on vacation today, but we all know my mom runs their schedule so maybe he just didn’t remember there was a game on. In any case I am about to run out for some drinks at a bar with friends while we watch the Saints game. Since Gretchen is from New Orleans and is organizing the event we are going to a Saints friendly bar. I don’t care who wins either way so it will be an interesting afternoon. I am going for some food and drinks. I mean I haven’t seen every one in so long, oh wait we went out on Friday. Never-mind.

Rangers Vs. Islanders

My friend rich called me this afternoon and wanted to know if I could goto the Rangers vs. Islanders game at the garden tonight. Not to pass up tickets for hockey I decided to go. The tickets being free was an added bonus. The seats where amazing. They where his companies season tickets. they had 4 seats and only the 2 of us. We sat in the second row of the upper area of the first level if that makes any sense?

The Islanders won, and it was actually a good game. The third period was a nail bitter. I had a great time. I wish I was able to go to games more often.

Yankee Stadium Tour

Today I went with a bunch of friends from work to Yankee Stadium. The team was away so it wasn’t for a game. We went for the tour. I had no idea that they do a tour year round when the team is not playing at home that day. I am not a baseball fan (and if I was there is a slightly better than 50% chance that I would be a Met fan) but this tour was cool.

We went to the Press box, a sky box, the locker room, and even got to walk around on the field and in the dugout.. We couldn’t go on the grass, but it was still cool being down there. I got some great pictures that I am going to post later.

When Miguel first organized this trip I said there was no way I was going. I figured a late August Saturday would be freaking hot and nasty. But when Friday came around and he mentioned that he had a few people cancel at the last minute I reconsidered. Thanks to the weather report, and that the tour was in the afternoon I figured I would go. I just have to forget that a stadium tour cost more than cheap seats.

Not So Much Scuba

Unfortunately my scuba adventure did not end up as I would have liked it. I had some ear equalization issues along with some light sea sickness that caused my first day to get cut short. Not wanting to push my luck I decided that I should not attempt a day 2. I always knew my ears were a potential problem. I had issues in every dive at the pool, but my previous open water dive in 2000 was fine after a while of adjustment. Well that seemed like a fluke since I had issues this trip. Hearing being a big part of my life I won’t push my luck on the subject again. That means I most likely wont pursue diving as a hobby anymore. It was an expensive experiment, but worth the attempt. I still have a year to change my mind before the class I took expires, but I don’t think I will act on it.

As for the sea sickness I hope that was a fluke. I never get motion sick. Not sure what was up with that. Probably just the heat and the water movement put me over the edge for a while. As long as I can fly and travel in a car without a problem I will be ok.

On the plus side I got a great day at the pool on Sunday instead of going diving!!!

Scuba Test Out

I scheduled my 4 test out dives for Saturday and Sunday this week while I am on vacation. This whole scuba thing is costing allot of money. Hopefully it is worth it. I am excited as well as nervous about the dives. For one thing I am still worried about my ears. Getting up to altitude on the plane caused some pain, and I had issues in the pool with equalizing my pressure at 10 feet. I know from the last time I dove that I had to give it some time on the first dive until I got used to it. So hopefully I will be ok.

My other concerns are the tasks I need to perform on these dives. Most of them aren’t bad, but a few are hard and I don’t like doing them. I hope to get as many of them out of the way on the first few dives as I can so the last few are relaxing.

The place for diving is a block away from the hotel so I can just walk there. The other good news is the dives don’t begin until 12:30PM each day. That means I can sleep in. It is like this place said how can we cater our schedule for Scott? I can sleep in and get some breakfast without having to rush to the dive boat.

I will update the blog with impressions from the dive later.

Scuba Day

Last Saturday I took my Scuba class. It was a 8+ hour day of study and pool time. In a nutshell it was allot of hard work. My ears still have some issue equalizing the first time I goto depth. I really wont know how I take it in the ocean until get in it. The pool is different since you cannot go that deep. I ended up getting a migraine during the last piece of the class. I was able to complete all the scuba pieces of it, but I got a bit sick after that. I tried to do the last part (treading water for 10 minutes) but I was shivering and freezing. The instructor said I could come back later in the week and complete it. the pool was closing very soon and I didn’t have time to warm up and try again. I got home from the class that night and went right to bed.

later that next week I did my tread water test. that was the easiest part of the whole class. I was able to just lie in the pool and not touch the side or bottom for 10 minutes. All I have left is my 4 open water dives. I hope to do them all in Cancun next week.
