It Is So Hot

Actually it is not so bad outside. It is just so hot in the office. It sucks in the heat and doesn’t let go. I was sitting at my computer and I could not concentrate. I said screw this, and decided to leave early. I am not staying if it is so hot, and I will be up really late in that heat tomorrow moving desks around.

Thank goodness I didn’t get a head ache, but my allergies are killing me. Not as bad as all last week, but still not good. I may hit the pool just so I don’t feel so sticky when I get home.

Final Move Plan

I have mentioned our construction plans for this week. What we are going to do is break apart cube walls that were moved when we originally occupied our NYC office. We built a large open area out of what was once 12 cubes. Now we are partially rebuilding the cubes so we can put people in them.

The first thing we need to do is move anyone out of the existing area. We have like 10 people sitting there now. They will be put in their new homes Wednesday night. Thursday the cube guys come and make all the changes.

Friday we (Jayson, Nelson, & I, with Dan supervising since he cannot lift anything) will make a number of cube moves to get everyone where they need to be post redesign. This means that at least a dozen people need to have their desks. moved. It will be interesting how this plays out. Most people have not complained about this, but their is bound to be a few as the move gets closer, or as they realize exactly where they are going.

Alergies And The AC

For the first time in a few weeks I am breathing normal. I switched from Zertec one a day to the 12 hour version. I was finding the once a day pill slowly wearing off as the day went on. By the time I needed to take the next day’s pill I was really not feeling good.

I took the first 12 hour pill last night. I didn’t have the greatest sleep, but I am not sure if it was due to the drugs. I woke up this morning and right after I got up I was breathing normally. I took the second pill before I left work, and so far so good. One problem I think I have been having is that all the windows are open at work. All the dust and pollen from outside is circulating around because we don’t have AC. The AC situation should be partialy resoloved today. We got two portable units that we will be powering up and hopefully cool the office till the main units are fixed. Maybe then I can breath ok!

Work, It Was Hot

I got allot done at work today. I setup 4 websites. I configured IIS, our Cisco Local Directors, etc. now all I need to do is get the SSL id’s for them. Jayson got cracking on the 3 new servers we just got in. 1 is done, and another is partially done. We also got through a bunch of support tickets. All in all a good day, except for the heat.

We fled the heat to the server / telecom room for allot of the day. it was just too hot, and I couldn’t sit in my office all day knowing AC was 20 feet from me. I still ended up out in the heat for at least half the day.

Most of the office left early to play softball. We stayed and finished up some work. I am not ready to play softball yet.

Check out the Mo-blog. One of our developers, James went out and bought a portable pool. They filled it with water and I got some pictures of people sitting in the office with their feet in the pool. it is really funny. yes it was that hot…

Tuesday Work, And AC Update

My apartment building finally turned on the AC for the building on Monday night. I figured this out Tuesday evening when it was really hot and I was cranky. My apartment is now cool and comfy. I wish I could say the same about work.

I am in shorts and sneakers today for work. They said relaxed dress code until they could fix the AC, so I am taking advantage of this for now. I wish it was just cooler, but I will settle for no paints now.

Last night I went to dinner with my parents. I got home at like 4PM from Jury Duty. that is hours earlier than my normal time. I went and got a hair cut and then went to dinner.

After that I went home and did some work. We were really backlogged since I was out for 2 days. I cut the backlog down allot but we still have more to do.

AC Update

The final word on the office AC has came down. Turns out our master plan cannot be enacted in time for it to get hot. It will be 77 degrees today. The problem we had in the past was the water tower we use to cool our water cooled AC’s put out really dirty and warm water. 80 degrees in NYC, but the water cooling the AC in kingston is coming into the system at 50 degrees. See the difference?

The other problem was the units we have are very old, and we had a full office. We have allot less people in the office now. The plan is to plug back in our old systems since we cannot install air cooled units in time for summer. The building we are in will take over control of the water tower and fix it up. This is a departure from the past when they wanted nothing to do with the tower. We are hoping that once the tower is in good working order we will actually get cool air in the office. I am crossing my fingers and toes.

I cannot go through another hot summer like the past 2, without good AC. If the AC sucks, I will be summering in the computer room. You will see me in October or so…

Projects

I am now short handed in NYC. Ironically I fill a slot in one location a slot opens up in another locoation. The hunt is on for a new support guy. Until that happens allot of projects are being put on hold. Or at least their completion date is on hold. Yesterday’s workload was not bad, but it was the calm before the storm.

I finally got my server to build the new FTP system. That is on hold until I can find the time to work on it.

Our upgrade to the notification system is on hold since I won’t have time to do the documentation or the work on it for the short term. The list goes on and on.

Friday Softball

Friday was my companies first softball game. We got cool new jersey’s this season. I am again my lucky #3. It was an interesting game. I of course didn’t play, but I went to watch. If last year is any indication, in the beginning everyone wants to play softball. After a few games you get less and less people showing up. I think the sign up sheet had almost 40 people wanting to play. With that kind of turn out I don’t want to play. Not that into it, and I figure I would let others play that wanted to. I got a jersey in case they need players later when everyone doesn’t want to go to games. Either way it is fun to watch. We won 16 to 15. It was an interesting game.

Before the game Cari, Dari, & I went to dan’s to give him a gift basket. He has been out due to back surgery so he welcomed the company, even if it was for 5 minutes. We surprised him at his apartment. It wasn’t a good idea. He couldn’t get up to buzz us in, and his dad (who is staying with him after surgery) was out walking the dog. We had to wait till his dad got back before we could get into the apartment.

After the game we went to a bar near the field. We had a few drinks and pizza on Glenn our CEO. He played first base. It was cool of him to treat us.

Spring Is Here

Spring is upon us. I have broken out the light weather jacket for the first time in 2004. It will be 65 in NYC today. That means that my companies office will be like a sauna since I bet the heat will still be on, and the AC is not working yet.

I like the winter. You know why? You can always put on another layer of clothing. When it is hot, there is only so much you can take off! I don’t get people complaining it is too cold. I just don’t get it. Put on some gloves and a sweater. Because if it is hot you don’t want most people taking off their shirts!

Warm And Damp

It is going to be in the 50’s today in NYC. It is also rainy. I have broken out my London Fog (Trench) rain coat. I need to replace this coat. It is getting up in years and probably could use replacement. The warmer weather is a double edged sword for me right now. For one thing my apartment building does not normally turn on the AC until May 15. By then it is really hot. Sometimes they turn it on early, but you never can tell.

Our work AC is nonexistent normally. We have had problems the past two summers with them. Now they are truly nonexistent. The water tower that runs them is gone. We were going to replace 2 of the 3 units with a more powerful air cooled system, but continue to use 1 of the water cooled units. That plan has to change since our building got rid of the water tower that we use. Turns out we shared that with another tenant and that tenant is leaving. Since the tower is in bad repair they are just getting rid of it. We are left to fend for ourselves. We have like 2 months before it starts getting hot again. Hopefully we get something done by then. If it gets too hot I am off to my apartment to work:)

I am not sure if anyone in the office can go through another super hot summer at work. It was 82 degree’s at work yesterday and it was in the 40’s outside.
