Wireless Woes

Still having AT&T wireless issues. They want me to get a new SIM card. So I went to the store. They were out. How they can sell phones without the card, I have no idea. I guess they use extra ones for replacements. I called customer care again and they are sending one, after I argued with them on why I won’t be charged $25.00 to get one. Why a SIM card will cause the dam phone not to work in my apartment is beyond me, but weirder things have happened.

Howard is looking to see if he has his old Treo 180 around that I can borrow for a bit. I am debating on if I want to get a Treo again. Now I am thinking if I can use his black and white 180, and live with it I may just get one of those till november and get the new Treo 600 when it comes out. That will save me from buying the color model that is like $300 and then want to upgrade it 3 months later. The black and white Treo 180 goes for like $130 on ebay. That is allot cheaper. I will see. If he doen’t have it I may just get it and take the risk on the $130.

On the plus side my new T-40 is great. And I got my cannon scanner to work with Mac OS 10.2 without a problem.

I am just grumpy today I guess

On the I got screwed side of the day, I rushed in the morning and caught the early train. The train proceeded to break down and require everyone to switch trains. The end result is I got into work at the same time I would normally have. Some days you cannot win. I shouldn’t complain. I did get allot done today. I am just tired and cranky. It is thursday night and I still have not done anything to schedule my SCUBA class. I will try again tomorrow, if not try to find the next class.

Thanks to Gus for talking me out of buying the G4 Powermac I saw that was really discounted (yet still expensive). I think I will keep my powerbook for a while more. I did say that I am not getting a new laptop for at least a year. I have almost half a year left on that promise. I will see if I keep it. with my track record I probably won’t.

Apple support and verizon fraud

I am having a bad week dealing with big companies. I ordered a High speed (well sort of) data card for a laptop at work. We got it through verizon wireless. the card is fine, but for some reason I got charged an extra $575 on the same day from verizon. In their defense they cannot find the charge in their system and believe it to be fraud. But it had to be one of their people doing it. I called the order in over the phone. At least my credit card company is taking care of it.

As for apple. Their support is good, when you get them on the phone. But if you don’t have applecare (i don’t) you pay first and then only if your problem requires hardware to be fixed within the first year they wont charge your credit card. First off applecare is expensive. Does other support agreements cost that much? Apple hardware is more money as it is, I don’t want to pay an extra $250 for a support deal on top of my expensive computer.

At least in my case the problem IS hardware related, but I hate giving out my credit card number to people if I am not actually buying something.

Dam Apple

I am pissed. I called to get my Powerbook fixed tonight at a reasonable hour of 9:30PM EST, only to find out that apple does not provide consumer hardware support after 9pm. Uh, hello apple. People use their computers 24/7, so you should have 24/7 support. Your windows competition you love to bash has 24/7 support. What is the deal. Your hardware is not that indestructible that you don’t need to provide support. Now I have to call your stupid support people during work tomorrow. I love spending a half an hour on the phone for support people to realize what I knew when I called that my speaker port is blown.

I love this powerbook and it has been working well, but I have had it for less than 4 months and it will be in for servicing twice. That is not good. I have had other computers for years and never needed servicing.

OK, my apple support bashing is over. I actually like this company but I can’t stand when a company falls flat on their face completely on their own. Dumbass stuff like this gets me wondering if I invested in the wrong computer? Granted I still have a ton of intel box’s, but I just want apple to get it right, and then maybe Microsoft will get a clue.

New and awesome things I can do with my Mac!!!

I keep finding new and cool things I can do on my powerbook that I cannot do at all on my windows machine(s) or it takes 10 times longer to do compared to my mac. I recently downloaded iSync 1.1. Now I can sync my cell phone with the mac using a USB cable and almost any mainstream cell phone. Worked great on my old Motorola V60i.

If that wasn’t enough I found a site that showed me how to use the same cable and phone to dial onto the internet using Verizon Wireless’s network. It is circuit switched at 14.4kbs but it works and does not cost extra per month to do, just uses your air time minutes.

And even better than dialing out using a USB cable is the ability to use my T68i as a GPRS modem (aka 56k speeds) with AT&T wireless. The dam software AT&T provides for windows doesn’t even work correctly with bluetooth, but the mac does without any special software! And why don’t more people use the mac again???

And have I mentioned how awsome itunes is? Or iPhoto? Winamp was good. I used it for years, but itunes blows it away!!!

Finally a good Mac OS X Web Browser

I have been searching for a good web browser for the Mac OS. Internet Explorer is so slow and it sucks. I tried Netscape 7 for OSX, and I didn’t like it. I tried Mozilla for the Mac, and I have issues with it’s GUI, and other usability issues. On the flip side I really like the Mozilla web browser for Windows. That is now my default browser for my windows machines. I have been using the new Apple Safari. It is ok. It has been the best of the pack, but that is not saying much. Some web sites don’t render well on it. Even though it uses the mozilla engine.

I think I finally found a winner browser. I am using a beta of the Mozilla project’s Camino Browser. It is built to utilize the OSX Coca engine and other OSX specific functions. It has some new features that make it work for me in OS X, while mozilla 1.3 just didn’t. It is still in beta but I have been using it all day and it seems stable enough. They (mozilla.org) claim it is good for day to day use even in beta.

Small Powerbook defect!

I figured out while I was on my vacation that my powerbook has a defect. The headphone jack only play’s stuff out of the left headset. I bought a new pair of earphones thinking it was the pair I had. Wasn’t that. Turns out when I got home I couldn’t hear anything out of the right speaker I plug the powerbook into either when I am home. I am debating if I want to send the thing back again for a week of repair for this problem. They take forever to fix these things. I could just get a usb speaker set, but if I ever sell the mac (and you know I will) I may have a problem.

My computers & Blogging stuff

I realized yesterday that I wrote a bunch of blog entries. I decided to write an entry on on topic, or group of topics. So if I want to discuss a few things at once I will have multiple entries broken down for your reading enjoyment.

I am back into my routine of writing on the train. that is how we got the morning and afternoon posts yesterday. I just forget to post when I get to work and just have to post time-stamp things later on. I tried to use the thinkpad for blog entry’s. I found a bug in w.bloggar. Well I think it is a bug. The dam thing wont work on my laptop. I use it once after install and then it crashes every time I try to open it after that. I just gave up on Monday. My powerbook works great, and it is light. I can do without the thinkpad some days during the week.

Yes I do have two laptops. You are reading correctly. I have my own personal Apple Powerbook G4 12″. it is the little powerbook. It is awesome. I am new to the mac’s. I have only had a mac since last july. The other machine is my company issued Thinkpad T31. It has a bright screen and weight’s around the same as the Powerbook even though it is bigger in shape. It is also an awesome machine. The down side is that as much as I tried, I cannot get any windows laptops to go into and out of standby and hibernate modes properly. The mac usually works. Also the smaller mac is easier to open on the train.

Then we have desktops. I have 3 computers at home (not counting the laptops). I currently have an AMD Atholon XP 1500+ computer running Windows XP Pro. That machine is my main desktop computer. I don’t use it nearly enough anymore, but I bought it in December 2001 when my desktop was my main computer. This box is tricked out even though I don’t utilize it that much. It has a gig of ram, 180gig hard drive, etc.

My next two machines are used as servers. I have my old desktop, A Pentium III 800 with 780megs of ram. I use that to test different things on. It used to be my windows 2000 server. Then I have an old Dell Dimension desktop that I think has Pentium III 700 in it. That is now my main server running Red Hat 9.0.

While I am on the topic of my computer gear I can say that I am using a Linksys DSL Cable router with 802.11g wireless built in. That gives me fast wireless while I am on my Powerbook!

There you have it. I am trying to shrink down the size or amount of stuff I have so it doesn’t look so bad in my living room. I just put the AMD computer into a new smaller & cooler looking case. The other two are already in mid tower cases so I am not sure what I can do with those.

Konfabusomthing

I use an Apple powerbook as my main personal computer. Well this week I do at least. But I digress. I have a Powerbook that is cool. I got this neet program called Konfabulator on it. It is like the old microsoft active desktop, but it actually works. I just downloaded a few neat “widgets” apps that run in Konfabulator. Yeah, they call them widgets, not me making stuff up. One of them is an offline blogging tool. Not sure if it better than Kun-Log, the program that I currently use. Tons of other useless but fun tools also. My favorate is the iTunes remote control and the magic 8 ball…

Gus gave me a bunch of other cool mac software to look at but I have not had time to look at it. I am still messing with VMWare.

Lazy Saturday’s

I am being lazy today. I need to get a mothers day gift for my mom, but that is all I have on my agenda today. I slept late, and I am just hanging out now. My idea of laying low is very geeky. I am installing VMware 4 workstation on my desktop computer. I want to get red hat 9 on it so I can use windows xp and red hat on the same machine. If it works it will be awesome. Right now it is installing red hat.

My mom instructed me that she wants some pocket book or something. I will give her money and she can go get it for herself. That way I don’t have to get the wrong thing. I was also instructed to get flowers. I just love the surprise involved in this day.

Since Gus fixed my linux box I now have a choice. Should I leave my site on Red Hat or move it back to Windows? As of right now I have a copy on both. My friend jayson is letting me use his box to host my site, and I still have a copy on my Red Hat server. I am thinking I am going to leave the blog on red hat and have the rest of the site on windows. That way I don’t have to mess with taking the front page extensions out of the site. I was trying to deal with that for a few weeks and so far have gotten nowhere. I just don’t have the time. For now I will leave everything in both places. Unfortunately I don’t have the photo site up at all during this transition. it is 800+ megs and I don’t want to deal with it right now.

I have been following the apple music store since it was announced last week. I have a mac. I like it allot. I also find I use iTunes over winamp 99% of the time nowadays. I also went out a few months ago and got an ipod. That also kicks ass. So I am in a position to use this new music service. 99 cents is not bad for a song. I am still unsure if it is worth it. I saw an entire album I want to maybe buy and see if the service is any good. Limewire and the gnutella clients, and kaza are tempting. I am on the fence right now. The file format is supposed to be better, but I still like MP3’s. I was not sold on Microsoft’s windows media format, and now I am skeptical of this new AAC stuff. What is weird is that Microsoft comes across as more evil big company like, and Apple is the underdog hip company. In fact they are probably both just as evil. Right now for work I of course an clearly a Microsoft guy, but for home I am a apple guy. All this rambling boils down to eventually will buy stuff on this music service. If anything I want to know if I am missing out on something really good, or just saving my money.
