Grogu, the Blanket, and the Accusations

This happened at Christmas. It is almost August when I got around to writing. Some stories take a while to get to

For Christmas, M bought me a throw blanket. Presumably me. Possibly the cat.

The idea was to have something to leave on top of the comforter so that when Grogu comes to bed, I can give him something to settle into without sacrificing half the duvet. He is a Devon Rex, which means he runs cold and treats any available warmth like a personal entitlement. In warmer months I would just toss the comforter over him and he would curl up in it and stay there. In winter that is not really an option unless I want to freeze.

The blanket solves that. He has something warm to nest in, I keep the comforter, everyone wins.

Except there is context here.

For a while now, A has had her own fuzzy blanket that she wraps him up in at bedtime. He sleeps in her bed, she crawls up around him, and neither of them seems to mind at all. It has been a whole thing. She is genuinely good at snuggling him and he clearly appreciates it.

When the new blanket arrived, A’s immediate reaction was that I was stealing her cat. She was kidding. Mostly. Or that is what I keep telling myself.

What she glossed over entirely was that Grogu would come to us regardless. The blanket was not a power move. I was just making it more comfortable for him, which is apparently all I do. M would say I am a pushover for the cat. She is not wrong.

This week he has been doing his usual routine. Sitting on someone’s lap downstairs, then migrating to the radiator around midnight because apparently it functions as his personal sauna, and then eventually making his way upstairs.

To our bed.

To the new blanket.

Except he is not picking me. He is picking M. Every time. I get none of the cat and all of the blame.

A is furious at me for a situation entirely of her own making, about a cat who is not even choosing me anyway.

Not that it matters. I am not keeping score.

Cat of Interest

Have you seen this cat? He goes by Grogu, Chicken, little dickens, and other Aliases. He is a cat of interest in the disappearance of a stuffed Shepard from our advent calendar. And probably other stuff.

Ok he is not missing thankfully, but we do have surveillance on him as much as we can.

Should We Have Named Grogu B.A. Baracus?

As a kid growing up, I loved the TV show, The A-Team. Yeah, I know, it’s not that realistic. Even then I kind of realized that they spent a lot of time shooting things and never hurting anybody, but I digress.

One of the gag’s that they always pulled was how they always found a way to get B.A. Baracus (Mr T) on a plane. He hated flying but they always tricked him into drinking milk or something. Whenever it’s time to give our cat his flea treatment every month, I feel like he’s B.A.

We get him and cuddle and snuggle up with him and wrap him in a blanket pretty snugly, and then one of us will put the medicine on his head, and then he finally realizes it as we’re finishing and slithers out of the blanket and runs away. The damage is already done, though, and he’s got his flea treatment.

Yet when I take him to the Vet he now knows not to eagerly get out of the carrier and will hiss at the vet straight away. He never hisses. He’s a smart cat, but he falls for our blanket trick every time.

I Almost Contributed To The Death Of My Cat

Today I was walking down my stairs as I normally do to get coffee in the middle of the day. My cat Grogu thinks it’s a game and when I put my hand on the top of the banister he tries to paw at it. I went to lean down and pet him when he was doing that. He had other ideas. At the same moment I was leaning down he was making a full leap with the intention of jumping up to my shoulder. Since I was going down and he was going up I mostly missed him. His paws scratched my neck a bit. However he kept going since my shoulder wasn’t where he thought it was going to be. When I mean he kept going, his trajectory took him two thirds of the way down my stairs. I cannot say for certain if he landed legs up however he recovered pretty quickly. For about three or four seconds I thought he was going to fly all the way to the bottom of the stairs and hit our step cabinet. While I was still getting over the shock of the situation he was sitting on the bottom step licking his paw waiting for me to finish walking downstairs.

He likes to sit on my shoulder however I haven’t seen him try to make one leap onto it before. That got me totally offguard.

If cats have nine lives I’m going to count that as one of them.

Grogu & The Couch

Grogu made a power move today and spent all morning sitting on the couch in M’s spot. Well played Grogu.

Now sure M was at work, but still power move cat…

The Story of Grogu’s Precious

Grogu has found sheer joy in taking the plush candles from our stuffed Hanukkah menorah. It took us a while to realise he was hoarding the candles like his precious. We would take one or two away from him, only to find him having stolen them back.

We keep our Christmas and Hanukkah decorations in two waterproof storage containers. Even just looking for the menorah to take a picture of it for this blog, the moment I opened one of the containers Grogu appeared and then was halfway in the container looking for it.

As of this writing two of the candles are still missing and presumed hiding under our refrigerator. In a related story I think under our refrigerator is his nemesis. He plays with things and the skirt across the floor under our refrigerator. He will then spend many minutes trying to get at whatever is under there.

Who Needs Free Boxes?

Someone at work asked if our cat has found the sheer joy of an empty amazon box. My reply was who needs boxes. He loves empty bags.

Grogu hung out in that bag for several hours. I have video of him trying to get back into it. Very entertaining.
