Hung Out, Watched Elf Saturday

Saturday I slept in. I wasn’t out too late on Friday, but I was tired from the week of work. I cleaned up my place and Rich came over to hang out. We haven’t hung out in a few months. Both of us have been busy, and he has been trying to conserve cash. We rented Elf on DVD. Neither of us had seen it, and everyone at work said it was great. I thought it was funny, but not outrageously so.

We walked down to Sassy Sliders for a quick dinner. It was a cool long walk, but we were on a budget. That place is like a wannabe White Castle, but the food is really good for fast food.

The plus side of having company over was that it forced me to clean up the crap in my apartment. It now looks halfway decent. I had a good day. I need to hang with Rich and Amanda more. I miss them:(

DVD’s I Might Be A Bit Embarresed To Admit I Own

Generally I am not embarrassed by my taste in DVD’s, or TV & Movies in general. Others tend to think so sometimes. I will admit that I am a fan of Science Fiction. I am addicted, but I have very picky tastes. Not just any crap will do. Wasn’t a fan of the Lord of The Rings. Just wanted to get that out there. So, my collection of DVD’s does include several SciFi movies, and an ever growing collection of TV shows on DVD.

My latest arrivals are the 7th and final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I will admit that I like that show. I started watching it just as the 7th season aired on TV. My friend Rich is a big fan. I made fun of him for years for watching Buffy. One day he was like, come on. You like Scifi, you like hot women, and you like well written comedy. Why don’t you give the show a try. So he lent me the first season on DVD. Dam Rich. I actually liked the show. So I ended up Tivoing season 2-6 and watched it. By the time I finished season 6 in rerun’s, season 7 was on TV. I now own all the seasons on DVD. There were a few episodes that I never actually got to Tivo, so it was good to get these last remaining hours of TV to watch. When I tell people I like this show I eather get asked “are you retarded?” or, “cool I love that show”. Why is Scifi so polarizing.

Other good DVD’s I have are Angel. That was another great series, by the makers of Buffy. Joss Whedon actually has great ideas. That guy also came up with Firefly. I have that also on DVD, but it didn’t last very long. I am also collecting as many Simpson’s DVD’s that they will put on DVD. Of course at the rate Fox is going by the time they are done putting all the Simpson’s seasons on DVD I will be in retirement and DVD’s will be outdated.

To set the record straight I am NOT a Star Trek fan. One of my vendors likes to make fun of me because several of us from work made the mistake to see a recent Star Trek movie. Out of all the series out there, the only one I can tolerate to sit down and watch now is Deep Space 9. That one at least had some killing, and real fighting. The other shows were people going around acting like no person I want humans to evolve into. Come on, who gets shot at and is like “lets talk this out”? Blow someone’s ass off. (Deep breath) Ok, my ranting is over.

Below are some links to other posts where I have talked about great TV shows on DVD, that most people will miss out on, but are fantastic.

Two Of The Best TV Show’s, Ever, And You Probably Didn’t Know It

What’s on TV?

Star Wars DVD

I just finished watching the Empire Strikes Back on DVD. It was as good as I remember it. The one issue I had was that I only got my two front speakers to work with the DVD. I am about to try a different DVD to make sure nothing is wrong with my sound system, but I think all is well. The question is why am I not getting the awesome digital surround sound that I should be?

Weird. After pressing a few random buttons on my stereo system I am now getting all speakers working with Return of the Jedi. Oh well. I may just have to re-watch Empire to get the better sounds!

New Cheap DVD’s

On Tuesday I received all 3 of my new DVD’s I ordered from Amazon. I used their zshops (think that is what they call it) and got 3 DVD’s for under $6 each. they were new, not even used. So far they are all in perfect condition. I will use that service again when I want something, but don’t want to pay $20 for it. I bought City Hall, Gia, and the Lawnmower Man. I never saw city hall but like john kuzac, can’t spell. I also never saw the entire movie Gia, but what I saw was weird and interesting so I figured I would pick it up. I need to go back online and get a few more cheap movies once I finish these.

Almost Famous

I am not almost famous. Not even close. I am talking about the movie. Saturday was low key. I got up early. Probably from the drinking friday night, so I decided to go get a hair cut.

I met my dad for breakfast after that, and we went to his jeweler. I got back my new (new to me) watch. He was able to find someone who took off 2 links on the band to make it fit on my wrist. I was very happy. I wore it all day Saturday. It was allot heavier than I am used to in a watch. It will take some getting used to.

Alison went to an afternoon movie and dinner with one of her friends so we met late to hang out. She wanted to watch a tape (or DVD). Since I don’t have any old VHS tapes, I decided to bring my Thinkpad over to her place. I hoped to plug it into the S-Video connector on her TV so we could watch a DVD. She does not have a DVD player. Turns out her TV is so old it didn’t have an S-Video connection. We ended up watching the movie Almost Famous on her coffee table. She never saw it. It was a great movie.

They are correct in saying opposites attract. Only I (a big tech guy) would go out with someone who has no DVD player and a TV from 1985. At least it is a big screen from 1985.

I had a good night even though Alison and her friend went to the Outback without me:(

Boulder Creek

Jayson, Dave and I went to Boulder Creek last night. it is a place like the outback. We stuffed ourselves. Whenever Jayson and I get together we always eat way too much really good food that is really bad for you. So far this visit is just like always.

Afterwards we went to Circuit City looking for the Family Guy DVD box set volume 1. We couldn’t find it. I told dave to look at amazon for it. We also drooled at all the high definition TV’s. We had a good night.

Two Of The Best TV Show’s, Ever, And You Probably Didn’t Know It

I have mentioned that I got Homicide life on the streets on DVD. Or at least the first and second seasons. It sits in my waiting to be seen pile. I also just got another show on DVD that is also arguably one of the best shows every. It is Babylon 5. I do not deny the fact that I like decent Sci-Fi, and Babylon 5 is a fantastic show. I cannot think of any series that is better. The story was unbeatable and the effects rocked. I recently got Season 3 on DVD. By far the best season of the 5 years of the show. I am nearing the end of the DVD set, and just probably watched 3 or 4 of my favorite episodes. I like special effects like anyone else, but some of these stories were crazy, or so deep it makes you stop and think. A fantastic show that not that many people ended up watching. Too bad, but at least they are making it on DVD. Why is it that some of the best made stuff is not even close to popular? Both shows I mentioned in this blog entry were never popular, and always had to fight to get renewed. Then you have shows like ER, that used to be good but are way past there prime. That show needs to be put out of everyones misery. I used to like it, but now it is painful to watch.

While on the subject of my TV habits I would like to mention another new show that I have started to watch. MI-5 on A&E. It is a rebroadcast of a BBC show. It is actually really good. I also like the British filming style, not a hollywood version of a british agency. I have my Tivo set to grab it.

On Call

When your dad says you have a crappie job what would you say? Oh, let me put things into context for you. My dad is a trauma surgeon in a emergency room for the past 30 years or so. He doesn’t do much surgery anymore but I am painting a picture for you. He has had a pager since the late 70’s early 80’s. Back then you called a number and the operator beeped the person with the pager. That person would then call into the switchboard and be put in touch with the person looking for them. So when I received a phone call today regarding an issue I was trying to get keith to look into he was like, wow your job is crappier than mine. That one line sums up the on call part of my job. Getting what in my opinion is stupid calls about users not able to do things like check their email. Normally they would wait till monday, but some people are high enough up the food chain that we have to help whenever. It sucks, but I like my pay check. Don’t get me wrong, I like what I do. It is just the on call part that sucks sometimes.

This day wasn’t a total loss. I got to spend time with my dad (not enough of it, but we hung for a while). I also got to do some shopping. I got Homicide Life on The Streets on DVD. If you never saw that show while it was on TV, go out and buy it on DVD. They have Season 1 & 2 out. It is probably THE best or one of the best TV shows of all time. In my opinion anyway. Thankfully allot of people say the same thing. I also got some clothes and Daredevil on DVD.

I got home just in time to get a mild migraine. Of course no migraine is mild so I ended up sleeping for like 4 hours. I feel a bit better but now my sleep schedule is totally off again. It is 10:30 and I am not tired. I am going to try to sleep soon. After my nap I took a Bextra. That may have helped a bit also.
