The Story of My Dad’s Haircut My Mom Didn’t Even Recognize Him

There is a photo of my parents from the mid to late 70s I would assume where at one point within the past 20 years my mom went to my sister while looking at the picture who is that strange guy I’m standing next to and my sister had to go mom that’s dad the reason she didn’t recognize him was his hair was radically different than he has now let’s just say it was a hairstyle very much embracing the 1970s His hair in the photo on this entry is close but not 70’s enough to represent what it looked like.

I miss you dad…

W Sisters and Arsenal vs Chelsea

For years, I’ve pondered which football team to follow. Before moving to England, I had no preference, so it felt like a big decision. Once you pick, you really can’t change. I even wrote about this in a separate entry. To make it official, I discussed it with my kids and got their buy-in on my choice. I had chosen Arsenal for several reasons (which I won’t go into again here).

I’d never been to a professional football match before. M, the girls, and I had talked about going, but without a team to root for, it didn’t feel worth the effort. This fall, though, I booked tickets. Since I have two daughters—and because it’s generally easier to get tickets—I chose an Arsenal Women’s match. Afterward, my daughters were looking at kits to purchase. That’s when my oldest announced she wasn’t getting one because she wasn’t sure if she’d follow Arsenal like the rest of us. Instead, she was considering Chelsea.

When I asked why Chelsea, she explained that one of her teachers is a Chelsea fan, and Alex Rider, a character from a book series she likes, is too. I jokingly told her I didn’t know where I’d gone wrong as a parent. She laughed, knowing I was kidding. I shared a story about my dad, a New York Giants (American Football) fan, and how, even though I wasn’t into football, if I had to choose, I’d have picked the Washington Redskins back then. My dad didn’t give me a hard time about it.

At the Arsenal match, I told T that if she enjoyed the experience, I’d look into taking her to a Chelsea home game to see if she liked them better. She agreed, while A was set on returning for another Arsenal match. (Side note: I keep reminding myself to say “match” instead of “game.”)

When I started looking into Chelsea home games, we stumbled upon the Chelsea vs. Arsenal game at Emirates Stadium. T then said if we went to that match, she’d “most likely” choose Arsenal. I offered the Chelsea home game option again, but she was set on seeing Arsenal face Chelsea at Emirates. Before the match, she even asked for the same light-blue Arsenal kit top that A had. I told her that once we bought it, there’d be no turning back. 🙂

The whole family went to the Arsenal vs. Chelsea match, and while we were all disappointed by Chelsea’s win, it was a great game. You can never be entirely sure with T, but I’m mildly confident she’s officially joined the rest of us as an Arsenal fan.

W Sisters Short on Failed At Parenting

Walking home from school today I told the girls that we are thinking about getting a car. We like the Prius. An old work friend once called them the Ninja of cars and that name stuck to me so I told them that if we get one I want to name it snake eyes. He is of course the most famous ninja I know.

A asked who he Snake Eyes was. I gave a fake shocked face and told her he was the best Ninja from GI Joe. She said what’s GI Joe? I asked her how she didn’t know what it was? A’s reply was that I had failed as a parent. In this case she was right, but it still stung!

Say hi to Grogu

This Saturday we got a kitten. He is a Devon Rex we named Grogu. If you are wondering why we named him Grogu then you either have not seen The Mandalorian or you have and did not see the picture of our Grogu.

Grogu has been a long time in planning. M has been a cat person for years before i meet her. When we meet she had a cat. It was her 2nd.

For at least a year or two the girls have wanted a cat. Originally i was the hold out. Finally I broke down and agreed to get one. My concerns were the hair and the fact that my mom is allergic to cats. We settled on a Devon Rex since they did not have much hair and some people reported less or no allergic reaction to this breed of cat. I know that is a point of contention but worth it especially since in general this cat breed seemed really cool.

In late March or early April M found a breeder in Manchester who had a litter to pick from. We selected our little guy and knew we wouldn’t get him till June. That fit our timeline.

Saturday M took the train to Manchester to pick our kitten while i was with the girls.

The girls were super excited for their new friend. He has spent a lot of time under the guest room bed and in his cat cave we got him. He will periodically play with someone and then go hide again. We read he needs time to adjust.

Today he was venturing out more and lied in the sun under our sky light on our stairs as well as by the window in the guest room for a while. He is pictured in an amazon box the girls put a blanket in and are using for him to rest in. Apparently Grogu loves it.

I write this post while he is curled up half in my lap half nestled in a pillow relaxing.

The Cookie Frame Up

My amazing wife made home made chocolate chip cookies with the girls yesterday. They were really delicious. We all had several yesterday.

This afternoon I went downstairs between meetings to grab some Cold Brew I made when I was presented with two of these delicious confections to pair nicely with my coffee. As I was leaving the kitchen however I was warned not to be surprised when i get negative comments from our kids. The implication was that I had eaten many of them. I only had two and my wife was covering up for the shall we say “several” that she had eaten.

I flatly refused to be the fall guy without a payoff payable in more cookies. I was told no. I am fine with taking the heat when I eat too much, cake, cookies, Dorito’s what have you. Lets face it in this house it is likely me however I am not taking the fall for someone else without compensation. i decided to take my outrage today to my blog while eating said delicious cookies. Side note as expected they did pair well with the cold brew.

Chocolate Bunny Tasting

baileys-chocolate

As M and I were getting the Easter baskets ready for the girls last night I realized how much extra chocolate we had. M mentioned she usually donates it to the school. With school closed we had a tone of it. We treated ourselves to some Lindt Hazelnut chocolate bunny. I also wanted some alcohol and had to think about what to best pair with the bunny. I settled on Baileys. It paired very well. I almost felt like I was a contestant on Top Chef with my prize desert. Well almost…

Enhanced Working From Home Now With Snacks

On day one of our Social Distancing (last Thursday) M made popcorn for the girls on their first day of home schooling. I got to get some too. Before social distancing made working from home WFH a common thing for everyone I never got treats. The staying inside most of the time isn’t great but the treats are at least a nice touch. Thanks M!

The Story of The Comic Strip That Defined The Last Decade

One day over the holiday break we took the girls to a Planetarium show and the Cutty Sark in Grenwitch. They always enjoy the Royal Museums Greenwich. We only buy a few memberships each year.  This is one of them.  It by far pays for itself more than any other. I think we got triple our moneys worth if we were to have paid full price each of the times we went to the Maritime Museum, planetarium show or Cutty Sark.

Since we went during a school break there was an arts and craft activity on at Cutty Sark. M and I grabbed some coffee while we assumed the girls would be working on a project. When I walked over to the activity area with the coffee M was the only person working on a project.

I am not sure what the original project however they had paper with three comic strip boxes. In them she drew a comic of her and I meeting, getting married, and as we were today with the girls. She is very creative and artistic unlike myself. I thought the comic strip was so awesome. It is now the banner on this site.

On Holiday

It is half term break. The girls are off school. I took off the week and my mom and youngest niece are visiting.

Hopefully this week’s visit will inspire me to have a story or two. It just wont be posted this week.

I will resume posting stuff I have in my backlog next week. My goal is to have one to two posts each week.  Until then…
