The Posh Half Work Day

Wednesday I had a meeting at company main office. I have never been there since we were in lockdown when we were acquired. I continue to be based out of Canary Wharf. I generally like the office there however the visit this week was a very nice upgrade.

A view of St Paul’s from my window was nice. The single train I needed to take to the office (no transfers are nice) was also great. Then the 34” wrap around monitor at the desk was a nice bonus.

Sadly I only spent the morning before I had to go back to Canary Wharf. When others asked if it was nice my only response was they have proper mugs at the coffee station.

W Sister Shorts on Hobbies

As we left the house today to walk to school, A turned to T and said “our hobby is fighting”. I asked why and her reply was because they do it so often.

I thought that was pretty funny especially since i do not think they excessively fight.

The Story of Our HomePod Mini’s

I mentioned in a previous post about Amazon Echo‘s “Comming Full Circle with Amazon Alexa” that the Apple HomePod minis came out at the perfect time for me. Not only did it fill a gap that I voluntarily created by not using Amazon echo anymore. I also had some gift card money and was able to pick up several of the HomePod mini‘s when they came out and not break the bank.

The original intention was to put speakers in every usable room. We put one in the kitchen to replace an echo. We replaced another echo in our master bedroom. I replaced the last echo in the guest room / office with another mini.

We had a charging base for the Amazon tap in the living room and we put two HomePod mini’s there. The intention with the two HomePod minis in the living room was to make them stereo speakers to use with the Apple TV. They sounded fine however we noticed early on that there was a delay between what was spoken and what we saw on the screen. That was really annoying so I reverted back to my Bose speakers that were hardwired into the TV. We still have both HomePod minis in the living room however it’s only for stereo music playing.

I like that I can handoff from my iPhone to a speaker to play music. What I don’t like is it’s not a consistent experience yet. There are times when it takes a really long time to hand off. There are other times when it tries to hand off to my office speaker when I just have my iPhone on my desk near it. Same problem happens on my nightstand at night sometimes.

Another function I like is streaming to multiple devices at the same time. Although that has been a problem in the past when there were a few instances that I couldn’t break the pairing as easily as you would think. It feels like the functionality is improving however it’s not quite fully seamless.

I also like the intercom. The girls like it as well. They’re not yet using it to message us between rooms however they are using the speakers to put music on every once in a while.

As of this writing it’s been over six months since getting the speakers and they may not be functionally on parity with an Amazon echo for us they are working out just fine.

It’s Time To Suit Up For Work

It’s been 17 months (give or take) since I last ventured to an office to work. That all changes today as I reset that clock. I am heading into this office for the first time. We moved the week after lock down so I have never worked out of the site I am going to. Even though I was there once and it is only across from the old site.

This outing started out as a get together for someone who was leaving. Along the way I got re-ogres (a little more on that maybe another time). So what was a meet up also turned into a half day meeting to talk about the new team.

For the occasion I decided to Suit Up. I forgot how comfortable my Ministry of Supply suit was. Even if I make the office trip semi regular I may need to get another one of them.

For full disclosure and clarity I wrote this post a few weeks ago when I first went into the office. Since then I have been in 3 times. Today being the third so I decided to finally publish this.

Photo is from when I was in NY and trying on said suit while debating on buying it.

13 Year Workaversary

September 8th marked my 13th anniversary at work. As with life so much is different now and so much is the same. In the past i enjoyed running down some numbers about the past 13 years so i am going to do it again.

So far since I started at Thomson Reuters I have technically worked at 3 companies. First Thomson Reuters, then Refinitiv, and now LSEG. I worked out of 7 offices, accross 2 continents. I have had 9 managers. Oddly in the past 4 years i have had 6 of those 9 managers. Using my post from 4 years ago on the same topic as a starting point have been in 6 different groups accross those 13 years. Of course the lines blur a bit with the groups in some cases.

On a personal side in the same 13 years I have lived in 3 apartments and one house. Moved continents, gotten married, and had 2 kids.

I do not know what the next 13 years will bring but if its anywhere near as good as the last I will be good!

Blink And You Have a 9 Year Old

I am still at times wrapping my head around being a dad at all and T has to go and turn 9. Time really does fly.

For her birthday all she wanted was to not go to after school and go out to eat at her favourite restaurant. Finishing off the evening with cake and a video with the cousins. I thought it was a pretty good birthday. All she really wanted was to not go to school. For the past few years she has been counting down birthdays until its on a weekend.

W Sisters and The Love of Trains, Planes, Buses and Not Automobiles

Ever since the girls were very little they had a fascination with transit. I am not really sure how much of that was implements from M and I. I remember before T could talk we would watch videos on YouTube of trains driving by. I would find a video of the TGV or the Bullet train or whatever that someone would stand by the tracks or station and video the train moving by. Either slowing into a station or blasting by at full speed. There were videos where people pieced this footage together for 10 or 20 minutes. T was fascinated with them. It took me way too long to realise why don’t I just show her Thomas the Tank Engine. I thought that would be much more interesting when just train is moving. Oh I was so wrong about that. She insisted in her non speaking way that she wanted the regular videos.

There were other times that I would take either T buy or sell or both kids in the stroller up to the long run railroad station in Forest Hills. We always tried to take them out for a walk even in the winter. With T’s interest in the YouTube videos as well as general fascination when we took the subway I had the idea of going to the railroad station. That consisted of us standing on a platform waiting for trains to go by. Since the station by our house was on the main line not all trains stopped. They got the experience of seeing a train shoot by at full speed. They also got to see the train stop and have the doors open. We stood by the front of the train platform so the motor man or a conductor would inevitably wave and say hi. I don’t know any times or how long we did this for however it felt like several months since I recall doing it in the freezing cold and the heat.

It was at least more than one instance where we decided to take the LIRR from Forest Hills to Penn Station and then just return home so the girls could experience the railroad.

When the girls were slightly older and we moved to London one of the first things they wanted to do was ride at the top of a double-decker bus. As luck would have it one of the local buses with a stop very close to a house was a double-decker bus. M and A were able to do that one day when T was in school shortly after we arrived. We have the picture showing how happy A was on that fateful trip. What’s funny is I think they only travelled about one or two stops. It did not matter since A cup to sit in the front had a panoramic view of the world. T was not at all happy since she wanted to do the same. That meant M again took them a stop at you on the bus. The photo of T on that day shows one happy little kid.

Girls love of sitting on the top preferably on the front of the double-decker bus has not changed in over two years of living here. It almost doesn’t pay sometimes to go to the top for a short ride since you have to get up and down the stairs with little kids. It doesn’t matter the girls insist on being up top.

The Tube trainsbe have a sealed front and back. That means you cannot look out the front or back of the training to look at the tracks. The DLR on the other hand has a class front and back where you can sit since there is no driver typically. The train is usually on full automatic and there is only a conductor. I mentioned this once to the girls and they were eager to check it out. Now whenever we take the TLR they insist on going to the front or back (preferably the front). If they can they sit on the knees looking out for they stand in the middle holding onto the handrail looking out the open glass front/back of the train. It is always adorable to watch and inevitably M or myself take a picture two.

There transit fascinations are not limited to local trains either. Since we do not have a car we have taken several overground trains. As far back as our first big trip to Edinburgh the girls have enjoyed walking around on the big trains exploring. I don’t mind taking them up and down the cars to see what’s going on. It is generally pretty boring with lots of the same looking cars. Every so often you get a different one like a first-class card or a café car. Even if I am not supposed to be in a first-class car if I am not paying for a first-class surprisingly people looked the other way when you’re walking around two adorable children. Actually the don’t look away you get a lot of hellos. I generally do that with the girls on the train since M gets a little motion sick walking around a lot while the train is moving.

With all their love of trains and buses are not that interested about being on an aeroplane. They love to watch planes take off and land especially at one of the lounges in Gatwick that has a perfect view of the runway. Once we get on a plane however all they want to do is sit and use their tablet to watch a video. I don’t blame them since we limit a lot on their screen time except when we got on an aeroplane. Our most recent trip had some promise for about 2 minutes when we took off T wanted to take photos of the lights and city scape before being distracted.

I do hope when they get older they still have some appreciation or curiosity about trains and buses. I know I do even now. That is why it is even more enjoyable to experience it with them.

Sorry New York State I Have Moved On

I get it NY state. I know I am a catch. The thing is I have moved on. You need to get over me.For some reason even after I have moved overseas over nearly 4 years ago I keep getting emails about renewing my drivers license. That is normal. I get it you are trying to be friendly. The thing is the license expired years ago. By your own rules its expired. Even with you special Covid rules about renewing. It has expired.

You need to just get over it. Me and my tax money left in 2017 and its not coming back. You will always be my first drivers license. I have fond memories.

Ted Lasso’s Pop Culture Infusion

Last night M and I watched the latest Ted Lasso episodes. We were both pleased to see that season two’s first episode was out. I find the show pretty funny and I’m trying to learn football along with Ted. Ok only sort of.

I love the Random pop culture references the writers throw in all the time. After this last episode it was pretty clear (to me) that I was going to have to put on some Gin Blossoms afterwards. Not at all ashamed to say I liked them in University and still do.

This morning as I was walking to Sainsbury’s sure enough I put on a Gin Blossims playlist. Thanks Ted.

Once I got to Sainsbury’s I realised they don’t open until 11 on a Sunday. Full disclosure I realise this when the doors would not open and the place was dark 🙂 The only way this story is related to Ted Lasso is the Sainsbury’s story happened while listening to Hey Jealousy.

I’ve been in this country for 3 1/2 years and sometimes I forget where I am. I somehow was expecting New York hours on a Sunday. On the plus side Costa Coffee was open. I don’t have my coffee before leaving for the market so I was able to sit and dictate this post to Siri.
