Weekly Roundup

Friday a bunch of us went to this swanky bar down town. Nelson knew people there. It was very cool. I normally don’t goto bars that tell you that they are not letting in more single guys. Miguel and I got that line since we got there later than the rest of the group, but thankfully we knew people who got us in. Plan B, was to use the single girls we were with to use as dates, but it didn’t come to that.

Everyone had too much to drink. It was fun. Saturday, Cari, Gus, and I tried to hit the frog exhibit at the natural history museum. We got there too late (most of us were hung over) and didn’t want to wait for the exhibit times we could get. We ended up going to see the Manchurian candidate. it was good. I never saw the original.

Today I had to goto work (see previous post) then I got together with rich to hang out. he saw my new place and then we went to this irish pub nearby for dinner. We rented the school of rock on DVD. it was funny, but I am glad I didn’t see it in the movies. it wasn’t worth $10 good:)

Not using my laptop on the rail road is really slowing down my blogging. I figured this would happen, but I am still sad that I don’t get to write as much as I used to. Now when I do get time to write I am trying to cram so much stuff into a single post. Allot probably gets lost in the translation. I want to set aside time a few times a week to write. I have been so busy that it is hard.

Sean mentioned to me yesterday when I spoke to him that my website has been down for several weeks. Yes it has been down since I moved. It was up for a day then I took it down again. I don’t want to continue to self host the site. I don’t want the extra computer in my living room. I bought a hosting plan, but they didn’t offer IMAP mail service like they eluded to, so I gave up on that sweat hosting package. My friend Miguel will host my site for me but I haven’t setup the site on his server just yet. Once that is done I will move my site to that box. the only difference is that I have to watch my disk usage since his server is running low on space. For now my blog and photo blog are still up. I expect my site to be back in about a week or so.

First Week In Manhatten

So far I am loving living in manhattan. It has been easy to get around, and I am doing allot. The down side to that is easy getting around, and doing stuff costs allot. I need to budget my going out money.

Taking cabs will also be done on a limited basis. they are fast but costly. I am happy with my unlimited ride metro card. That should get me around most places.

Tuesday a bunch of us went to dinner at old town tavern. I cut out after dinner but everyone else went to see Faranhight 9/11. I refuse to see another Mike Moore movie. That doesn’t mean I am a republican though!

Wednsday Jayson and I hit outback. I ate so much I could barely walk to the train.

Saturday Jayson and I went shopping, and hung out at both my place and his. I went to bed bath and beyond and got some bathroom stuff and cleaning supplies. I now can take a normal shower with a new shower head. We also went to the apple store, but see a different post for that information.

Today I hung out and cleaned. Then I meet up with my family for my mom’s birthday dinner.

Central Park Rocks

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon in manhattan. What to do? Skate in central park of course. I broke out my Roller Blades and decided to do some exercise. I know, what was I thinking? Actually I used to roller blade several miles a week back in the day (aka college). I figured it was time to do it again.

I didn’t believe anyone when they said the park was great. It is. There is a whole road that is closed off just for jogging, biking and blading. And because it was a nice day, there were nice looking ladies out. Hey I am a single guy, so it is ok to look…

My back started to hurt after like 30 minutes, so I didn’t stay out for long. Now you can say that my back hurt because I was out of shape, but that would be incorrect. I always had issues with that part of my back when I roller bladed. I am not sure if it was how I bladed, or if I just have a bad back. I need to slowly build up to where I was before. It has been like 6 years since I roller bladed regularly. I hope to get 2 sessions in a week during the summer. I am not crazy enough to think I can do it during the week, but on the weekends nothing is stopping me from doing it.

Next time I hope to go further on the path. I always like exploring new areas, and roller blading, so this is a good combination.

Exploring

I did some exploring today. I scoped out the stores around my new place. I got a decent hair cut. Found a starbucks, a few deli’s, drug stores, and other essential places. I still have to find places to order food from, but so far I like what I see.

I also got my Fresh Direct delivery. I love that place. I will need to make a follow up order in the next two weeks. I forgot some stuff. This order was expensive since I threw out or ate everything before I moved.

The Move

The move went surprisingly well. Turns out I was very nervous for nothing. The movers I picked were very fast. They showed up early and we were out of my old apartment by like 10:30Am. The whole thing was done by 1:30PM. They put back together both wall units without major issues. My living room wall unit had some stripped screws so my dad and I will fix that later, but everything else was fine. I was worried about the sharing the elevator to move for nothing. The other people moving at my old place never showed up.

My sisters truck came in handy. We packed it up and my dad and I drove that into the city. Gretchen met us at my new place so she could stay with the movers while my dad sat in the truck and I brought stuff upstairs. My dad was able to take off early and even get some work done. Gretchen and I went to bed bath and beyond to buy crap. I took her to lunch for her help. It was nice to have a move go off without major issues.

Because the movers were fast, the cost was allot less than I thought it would be. That was nice also.

T-Minus 22 Hours

It is getting down to the wire. I packed almost everything last night. All that is left is my bedding, some clothes, and a few loose ends. I have 2 extra box’s for that crap. I am also going to pack an overnight bag with stuff just in case I cannot find my clothing Friday.

The game plan is to goto my sisters tonight when my mom is baby-sitting morgan. Get her truck, and empty it of all the baby crap. Then drive it home and park it for the night. Thursday while the movers are packing up their truck, I will pack up the jeep with the things they can’t move or I don’t want them to move. Then when the movers are done with my apartment, my dad and I will drive the jeep to the new apartment and hopefully unpack it before the movers get there.

I was going to leave work early today and finish up anything I forgot to do, but I cannot get the jeep until later since I don’t know when my sisters nanny will be around. I have to wait for my mom to get to her place since I don’t have a key. I also may get to see Ms. Morgan then also. if I went during the day I might not see her.

T-Minus 2 Days, Plus Tivo Withdrawal

My Tivo is packed for my move. Last night I wanted to finish as much as I could today so it is away now. I wont have it on until thursday the earliest. that is the longest I have gone without my tivo recording stuff form me since I got it in September 2001. I don’t want to imagine all the things it is not watching for me:)

It is another rainy day in NYC. It will be muggy in the office with poor AC. Today is filled with no less than 4 meetings for me. Spaced just far enough apart that I won’t get anything meaningful done between them:( I need to get stuff done today, since I want to leave early tomorrow to finish any loose ends up with my move.

Late last night I was able to install the Entourage palm connector for Office 2004 on my laptop. I got my Treo to sync up with my Powerbook. Now I can try to use the powerbook as my PIM instead of my Thinkpad. Not sure if outlook will go away completely, but I want to use Entourage a bit more to see if I like it. For now the syncing with my palm, pc laptop and two mac’s is actually working. No corrupt data yet. That will happen when I try to edit entries in more than one place at the same time.

After work today I need to get more box’s from staples. Then I have to bring over a bunch of stuff to my parents place. They want an air mattress. I have bedding for them. I have some of my dad’s tools. I also need to give my dad some loose change (about 5 pounds of it) to sift through. He likes to look through change for anything out of the ordinary.

I also have more stuff to throw out. I am trying to get rid of as much as possible that I don’t need.

T-Minus 3 Days

The move happens in 3 days. I am starting to freak a bit. Everything needs to go off perfectly or I will have problems. My doubts about if the movers can move everything from one apartment to another between 8AM and 4PM is really starting to worry me. getting from my old place to my new apartment after the movers finish at my old place but before the cable guys show up at 2PM is also in question.

I have most, but no all my stuff packed. I still have the computers, some clothing, some kitchen ware, and stereo to pack. not sure if I have enough box’s. Of course I was never sure. I may go buy more today.

I went to Ikea with Jayson and Gretchen yesterday. I didn’t see anything that would get me to throw out my current living room wall unit, so I am stuck with it for this move. It will be the single biggest problem to move. I just hope that it doesn’t slow down the movers too much to cause an issue I haven’t been to Ikea in ages. Some of the stuff was nice, the rest was obviously cheap.

Another reason I haven’t been to that store in a while is traffic. We sat in construction traffic going out there, and accident traffic coming back. Another reason why I am moving into manhattan.

I went to Amy’s surprise 30th birthday party yesterday. It was nice, but I don’t speak to many of the people I saw outside of holidays. Because of that it is always awkward. Family events like that are weird. They aren’t really family, but my family is so close and we have known each other so long we are closer than my real family. So it had the look and feel of a family event. Baby Rily was very cute. Unfortunately baby Morgan was unavailable. She had another birthday party to goto. I hopefully get to see her when I get my sisters jeep on Wednesday night. I will do dinner with them if I am done packing by then. I just hope that I am done packing by then.

It is funny, I was all worried that I would have extra tickets to the van that takes me to the train. It turns out I will be 1 day short on them. that works out perfectly for me. I just bought 2 round trip tickets for today and tomorrow for the rail road. I will play Wednesday by ear and decide then if I want full fare or off peak. It turns out that a weekly LIRR ticket is cost effective if you goto manhattan 3 or more times in a week. For me it was a toss up since I was not sure if I would be coming home from work on Wednesday regular time or early. It was better to pay a few extra bucks and not be locket into a ticket in the long run.

Man I Have Been Lazy

I have been so lazy the past 3 days. I wrote a bunch of blog entries and I have not updated any of them to the site. I will do that when I get home tonight, I hope.

Another website note, my site is currently down. The blog and mob are up, but my regular site is down. I unplugged it when I took down my wireless point / router. I will bring it back up when I move. It is not worth redoing that now when I am moving in a few days anyway. I may end up moving my site off to my friend Miguel’s server he hosts.

T-Minus 6 Days

No major news to report in my move preparation. Jayson, Gretchen, and I are trying to goto Ikea sunday. I want to look for a new wall unit so I don’t have to bring my old one with me when I move. Jay and Gretchen want new couches. Hopefully we get out there. The problem is Ikea is out on long island so they would have to take the train to me and then we would have to drive. The problem is (major reason I am moving) that no subway goes near my place now. You have to take the rail road. And that is expensive and a pain in the ass due to the schedule. Only 6 more days to worry about that!!!
