Poker Wednesday Again

We actually got together to play poker again today. I fared better than I did last week. I still didn’t win, but I was back to my old self. I had $40 on the table and came away with $38.50. Not bad when only 2 other people out of 8 walked away with anything. And only one of them had a profit. It was a John taking everyones money night. I was down for a while and happy that I came back in the end. If people would play hands I stayed in on in the end I would have had a profit. I had 2 (count them 2) full houses near the end and no takers even after I tried to slow play them. I won’t complain about losing a buck fifty. To me that is a wash.

I personally don’t like the style of play that went on. Everyone seems to bully people out of the game before the flop. John does it, and since he is effective at it everyone seems to emulate it. With 2 cards you have nothing, don’t bet $3 and before the flop and then bet nothing after it. It makes you look like a dick. That is just my opinion.

Overall it was a decent night. Hopefully we can play again before December!

Poker Loss

Yesterday at Brian’s request I got a last minute game of hold-um setup. We did it at my place. We had a good turn out. I think 8 showed by the time we were done. I lost $40. I have never lost when we don’t play tourniment. I broke even, or won but never flat out lost all my money I played with. It felt weird. it was also weird not being able to leave in shame since it was my apartment. It wasn’t that bad actually, but I would have liked to play a bit more.

We all want to get together more regularly, but who knows who will take it upon themselves to schedule it. Even with the loss I had a good time.

Poker Or Not

I missed a poker game last night due to my sleeping. I know it is kind of sad. What I am I going to do if I have a bad head ache? Jayson said he won big. That makes me think the people he played with were not that good, but he said they were decent. When we play with people from work, he usually doesn’t do that well.

I hope to play next time. Now I have to tell John why I didn’t show up. I tried to leave him a message, but I don’t think he got it. Cannot really help falling asleep due to exhaustion and a migraine, sorry. They did have 7 players so I don’t feel so bad.

Yankee Stadium Tour

Today I went with a bunch of friends from work to Yankee Stadium. The team was away so it wasn’t for a game. We went for the tour. I had no idea that they do a tour year round when the team is not playing at home that day. I am not a baseball fan (and if I was there is a slightly better than 50% chance that I would be a Met fan) but this tour was cool.

We went to the Press box, a sky box, the locker room, and even got to walk around on the field and in the dugout.. We couldn’t go on the grass, but it was still cool being down there. I got some great pictures that I am going to post later.

When Miguel first organized this trip I said there was no way I was going. I figured a late August Saturday would be freaking hot and nasty. But when Friday came around and he mentioned that he had a few people cancel at the last minute I reconsidered. Thanks to the weather report, and that the tour was in the afternoon I figured I would go. I just have to forget that a stadium tour cost more than cheap seats.

Tivo Needs The Boot

I keep talking about it, but I think I am finally going to pull the trigger on getting rid of my Tivo. With an extra capture card I can get 2 tuners on my PC, for no cost per month. I almost exclusively use Beyond TV now and only goto Tivo for things that I forget to capture on my PC. With a second capture card I could get everything on the PC in nice transportable MPEG files. I think this month is the month.

For me it is either Beyond TV or EyeTV on my mac that will replace the Tivo. Still debating that. it is not that I don’t like the Tivo. Mine is almost like a pet. It is great, but why pay a monthly fee for something I can get for free?

Not So Much Scuba

Unfortunately my scuba adventure did not end up as I would have liked it. I had some ear equalization issues along with some light sea sickness that caused my first day to get cut short. Not wanting to push my luck I decided that I should not attempt a day 2. I always knew my ears were a potential problem. I had issues in every dive at the pool, but my previous open water dive in 2000 was fine after a while of adjustment. Well that seemed like a fluke since I had issues this trip. Hearing being a big part of my life I won’t push my luck on the subject again. That means I most likely wont pursue diving as a hobby anymore. It was an expensive experiment, but worth the attempt. I still have a year to change my mind before the class I took expires, but I don’t think I will act on it.

As for the sea sickness I hope that was a fluke. I never get motion sick. Not sure what was up with that. Probably just the heat and the water movement put me over the edge for a while. As long as I can fly and travel in a car without a problem I will be ok.

On the plus side I got a great day at the pool on Sunday instead of going diving!!!

Scuba Test Out

I scheduled my 4 test out dives for Saturday and Sunday this week while I am on vacation. This whole scuba thing is costing allot of money. Hopefully it is worth it. I am excited as well as nervous about the dives. For one thing I am still worried about my ears. Getting up to altitude on the plane caused some pain, and I had issues in the pool with equalizing my pressure at 10 feet. I know from the last time I dove that I had to give it some time on the first dive until I got used to it. So hopefully I will be ok.

My other concerns are the tasks I need to perform on these dives. Most of them aren’t bad, but a few are hard and I don’t like doing them. I hope to get as many of them out of the way on the first few dives as I can so the last few are relaxing.

The place for diving is a block away from the hotel so I can just walk there. The other good news is the dives don’t begin until 12:30PM each day. That means I can sleep in. It is like this place said how can we cater our schedule for Scott? I can sleep in and get some breakfast without having to rush to the dive boat.

I will update the blog with impressions from the dive later.

Poker At My Place

Tonight we had another poker night at my house. We had a nice turn out of like 9 people. I had a good time. I ended up for the night, but not by much. I won the next to last hand with a big win for me. But I lost most of the winnings on the last hand to John. We were both going for the straight, he had Jacks and three’s. I had Kings & Queens. We both shared a pair of tens. He went all in on the turn so we flipped our cards up. The only way he could win the hand would have been if he got a 3 on the river. Well he got it. Dam lucky hand. If I won that hand I would have been a big winner for the night, but I ended up barely breaking even, but at least I broke even. Well if you count the cost of hosting I was down for the night, but the ability to goto bed after everyone leaves and not travel home was worth the cost difference.

Jon is going back to school this weekend so I don’t know when Dan will schedule another game. Now that I have my own set of chips I can always call one though. Maybe the week after I get back from vacation?

Scuba Day

Last Saturday I took my Scuba class. It was a 8+ hour day of study and pool time. In a nutshell it was allot of hard work. My ears still have some issue equalizing the first time I goto depth. I really wont know how I take it in the ocean until get in it. The pool is different since you cannot go that deep. I ended up getting a migraine during the last piece of the class. I was able to complete all the scuba pieces of it, but I got a bit sick after that. I tried to do the last part (treading water for 10 minutes) but I was shivering and freezing. The instructor said I could come back later in the week and complete it. the pool was closing very soon and I didn’t have time to warm up and try again. I got home from the class that night and went right to bed.

later that next week I did my tread water test. that was the easiest part of the whole class. I was able to just lie in the pool and not touch the side or bottom for 10 minutes. All I have left is my 4 open water dives. I hope to do them all in Cancun next week.

Half Day

I took a half day off from work today. I had time I needed to burn off, and I wanted to go sign up for a Scuba class. I am now all signed up for a one day (8 1/2 hour) class next Saturday. I have my reading material sitting beside me. I know I have to read it, but like all school work I am procrastinating.

I also got a mask, snorkel, fins and other accessories I will need for the class. I will write more about it later.
